Rainfall and wet pavement may have contributed to multiple accidents Saturday that sent 10 people to hospitals and slowed traffic to a crawl on the Turner Turnpike.

Oklahoma City emergency crews responded to the first accident at 12:16 p.m. in the westbound lanes toward Oklahoma City, near mile marker 141.

Twelve accidents were recorded in the five-mile stretch between mile marker 137 and mile marker 142 between 12:16 and 4:55 p.m., Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokesman George Brown said.

Crews from Oklahoma City and Wellston took 10 people to area hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O’Leary.

"The supervisor believes that weather is more at play than rubbernecking,” O’Leary said. "Dispatchers blamed it on rubberneckers, but the supervisor at the scene believes it’s just the weather.”

Traffic backed up on the turnpike for about two hours when more accidents occurred near the original wreck and cars had to be diverted to the shoulder.

Brown said at least 17 vehicles were involved in the accidents.

Help wanted: a "supervisor" that understands that the only way weather can cause an accident is when damage is done to a stopped or parked vehicle. Anything else is the result of a driver making bad decisions.

Weather does not cause accidents, a driver's failure to make proper changes for weather causes them. Take responsibility for your actions, or in this case, inactions.
