Inmates at state prison to have traditional Thanksgiving fare

McALESTER — About 1,100 inmates and staff at McAlester’s maximum security Oklahoma State Penitentiary will feast on a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, done on a massive scale.

Bob Compton, food manager at OSP, said the main meal will be served around 4 p.m. Thursday, and includes 70 20-pound turkeys, totally 1,400 pounds of the holiday fowl; about 60 gallons of gravy; and about 80 gallons of cornbread dressing.

Also on the menu is 30 gallons of cranberry sauce; 80 gallons of mashed potatoes; 80 gallons of green bean casserole; and 1,200 dinner rolls. For dessert, there will be 1,200 slices of pumpkin pie; and 1,200 slices of carrot cake with whipped topping. Also to be served will be 160 gallons of tea.

Adjoining Jackie Brannon Correctional Center, a minimum security facility, will also have a Thanksgiving meal for it’s more than 700 inmates.
