Additional term limit measure passes Oklahoma Senate panel

By BARBARA HOBEROCK World Capitol Bureau

OKLAHOMA CITY - A measure that would place a 12-year limit on those serving on most boards and commissions cleared a Senate panel on Monday.

Senate Bill 1597, by Sen. Gary Stanislawski, R-Tulsa, passed the Senate General Government Committee by a vote of 5-4.

The measure would limit terms of service to six years with a maximum 12-year limit of service per board, Stanislawski said. The measure, however, would not prevent someone who served 12 years on one board from serving on a different board after the term on the original board was completed, Stanislawski said.

Another measure, Senate Joint Resolution 49, also by Stanislawski, failed by a vote of 4-5.

The resolution would have let voters decide if constitutionally created boards, such as the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, should also be subject to the same term limits.

The measure would have also applied to the regents for the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University.

Stanislawski said he does not plan to revive the joint resolution this year.

Stanislawski said he is the product of term limits, referring to the open Senate seat he successfully obtained after then-Sen. Jim Williamson, R-Tulsa, hit the limit of 12-years of service.

Stanislawski said the two measures were an effort to get people with new and fresh ideas to serve in state government.

Yes term limits for everybody is in order.

Continuously kicking experienced people out of government only gives the lobbyists more influence, because they become the only ones who really know how things work. If incumbent politicians are so bad, then let them lose an election. Why is everyone so enthusiastic about restricting our ability to vote for who we want in office?
