1923

Adolf Hitler marched into the Burgerbrau, a famous Munich beer cellar, at the head of 600 men and announced that the government had been overthrown and replaced by one headed by Gen. Erich Ludendorf and himself. But the future Nazi fuhrer's "beer cellar government" fell apart the next day when his followers deserted.

1932

Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt was hailed as the new messiah to lead the United States out of the Great Depression and was elected president in a landslide over incumbent President Herbert Hoover. Reforms and new programs were put into effect but the Depression did not end easily; hard times lasted until the late 1930s and full employment awaited the start of World War II.

1994

Republicans captured the Senate and made a stunning showing in the House in mid-term elections seen as a message to President Bill Clinton. The GOP also won a string of governorships. Republicans hadn't controlled both chambers of Congress since 1954.

2000

Democrat Al Gore conceded he had lost the election in a telephone call to President George W. Bush but retracted his concession in another call to Bush about an hour later. The winner wasn't determined for more than a month — after a recount involving "chads" on ballots in Florida and a Supreme Court ruling. Gore had a greater popular vote; Bush won the electoral vote.

Yes, Gore, you lost! Thank God! You have become rich by the fantasy of global warming that you dreamed up.
