By Associated Press
Published:
11/10/2009 2:26 AM
Last Modified: 11/10/2009 5:19 AM
The 13 people killed Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas:
Michael Grant Cahill
, 62, of Cameron, Texas
Cahill, a physician assistant, suffered a heart attack two weeks ago and returned to work as a civilian employee after just one week off for recovery, said his daughter Keely Vanacker.
Maj. Libardo Eduardo Caraveo
, 52, of Woodbridge, Va.
Caraveo arrived in the United States in his teens from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, said his son, also named Eduardo Caraveo.
He earned his doctorate in psychology from the University of Arizona and worked with bilingual special-needs students at Tucson-area schools before entering private practice. Caraveo arrived at Fort Hood on Wednesday and was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Justin M. DeCrow
, 32, of Evans, Ga.
DeCrow was helping train soldiers on how to help new veterans with paperwork, his wife, Marikay DeCrow, said. The couple have a 13-year-old daughter, Kylah.
Capt. John Gaffaney
, 56, of San Diego
Gaffaney was a psychiatric nurse who worked for San Diego County for more than 20 years and had arrived at Fort Hood on Wednesday to prepare for a deployment to Iraq. He joined the Army Reserves about two years ago, his family said. He is survived by a wife and a son.
Spc. Frederick Greene
, 29, of Mountain City, Tenn.
Greene's family released a statement calling him a loving son, husband and father.
Spc. Jason Dean Hunt
, 22, of Frederick, Okla.
Hunt graduated from Tipton High School in 2005 and had married just two months ago, his mother, Gale Hunt, said. He had served 3 1/2 years in the Army, including a stint in Iraq.
Sgt. Amy Krueger
, 29, of Kiel, Wis.
Krueger joined the Army after the 2001 terrorist attacks and had vowed to take on Osama bin Laden, her mother, Jeri Krueger, said. Amy Krueger arrived at Fort Hood on Tuesday and was scheduled to be sent to Afghanistan in December.
Pfc. Aaron Thomas Nemelka
, 19, of West Jordan, Utah
Nemelka chose to join the Army instead of going on a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, his uncle Christopher Nemelka said.
He was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in January.
Pfc. Michael Pearson
, 22, of Bolingbrook, Ill.
Pearson joined the military about a year ago, his mother, Sheryll Pearson, said.
Capt. Russell Seager
, 51, of Racine, Wis.
Seager was a psychiatrist who joined the Army because he wanted to help veterans returning to civilian life, said his uncle, Larry Seager of Mauston.
Russell Seager's brother-in-law, Dennis Prudhomme, said Seager worked with soldiers at the VA hospital in Milwaukee who had post-traumatic stress disorder. He was scheduled to go to Afghanistan in December.
Pvt. Francheska Velez
, 21, of Chicago
Velez was pregnant and preparing to return home. Velez had recently returned from deployment in Iraq and had sought a lifelong career in the Army, said her father, Juan Guillermo Velez.
Lt. Col. Juanita Warman
, 55, of Havre De Grace, Md.
Warman was a military physician assistant with two daughters and six grandchildren.
Warman volunteered with Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, a reintegration program for Maryland National Guard soldiers returning from deployment overseas, according to Guard officials.
She was at Fort Hood preparing for deployment to Iraq.
Pfc. Kham Xiong
, 23, of St. Paul, Minn.
Xiong's father, Chor Xiong, is a native of Laos who fought the Viet Cong alongside the CIA in 1972; Kham's brother, Nelson, is a Marine serving in Afghanistan.
Kham Xiong was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.
He and his wife, Shoua, had three children ages 4, 2 and 10 months.

Welcome to America !

Muslims WITH RADICAL VIEWS in the military is an issue & needs to be dealt with. How can a soldier possibly remain loyal to the U.S. of America when they believe their reigious beliefs reign supreme over the laws of the country they have sworn to protect ? Beyond the military, how are folks in the public whom are sympathetic & sometimes radical in their beliefs & views allowed to become citizens of the U.S. when they obviously have divided loyalties ? Thinking out-loud !

Many of the Muslims serving in the U.S. Army are Black Muslim converts. Nursing grievances galore, in the same vein as Louis Farrakhan.
This is just the beginning. Maj. Nidal showed it could be easily done in a "gun-free" zone.
More will follow.

Yes...live rationally...
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see anything irrational in my post. Like I told you before, if you wanna deport me, you've gotta catch me first.

Besides, I was born and raised right here in Oklahoma. I've got just as much right to be here as you.

hardball, We should do what our civilized society dictates and that is to bring criminals to justice. If one has not committed a crime, one should not be in danger of deportation or incarceration. This is America, remember?

Proud Muslim has stated many times what his religion and this country mean to him, hardball. I would like to remind you that you are not the decider regarding the conditions of his citizenry or his religious affiliation.

It was heartwrenching to watch the service today for these fallen soldiers, to see the pain the families and other soldiers are suffering as they filed past the pictures/boots/guns of the fallen. My heart is full of pride in these soldiers who gave so much and those lives cut too short.

My sympathies and prayers go out to all the family members - it makes it more real and horrible to know their names and a little of their stories. It's heartbreaking.
