1906

A visiting bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church-South died at the Brady Hotel after an illness of 14 days that developed after his visit to a neighboring town, where a small chicken bone became lodged in his throat. The chicken bone caused an infection that resulted in his death.

1959

Vice President Richard Nixon, at the piano, and comedian Jack Benny, on his violin, played the Missouri Waltz at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C., at the annual Presidents Ball. Benny reminded the audience that in 1945 he played a similar duet with President Harry Truman and decided he would give Nixon equal time.

1964

The upper level of the Verrazano Narrows bridge, at that time the world's largest suspension bridge, opened in New York City. The bridge connects Brooklyn with Staten Island.

1973

President Richard Nixon's attorney, J. Fred Buzhardt, revealed to U.S. District Judge John Sirica the existence of an 18 1/2-minute gap in one of the White House tape recordings related to Watergate. The gap was in the recording of a discussion June 20, 1972, between Nixon and his chief of staff, H.R. Halderman, three days after the Watergate burglary.
