1934

Gov. William H. "Alfalfa Bill" Murray approved a leave of absence from the state penitentiary for Matt Kimes, serving two life sentences for murder, to allow the killer to go quail hunting with his attorney. Critics recalled that several convicts were given leaves a year earlier to go fishing and that some continued their fishing until killed or captured. Kimes took his leave in early December but the hunting trip was cancelled because of bad weather, he said.

1943

President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek began a five-day secret meeting in Cairo to discuss measures for defeating Japan. At the close of the meeting, they issued a statement that they had agreed on a plan of military operation against Japan by sea, by air and by land. The meeting remained a secret until Dec. 1.

1963

President John F. Kennedy was killed by an assassin's bullets as he rode with his wife and Texas Gov. John Connally through the streets of Dallas. Connally was wounded. Within an hour after the death was confirmed, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas took the presidential oath of office on the plane that then carried Kennedy's body back to Washington. Lee Harvey Oswald, 24, was charged with the slaying of Kennedy and was killed two days later by striptease club owner Jack Ruby.

One of the saddest days in our history. The assassination of JFK.
.
I was working nights and was asleep on the couch that day. I had fallen asleep with the TV on and woke up hearing Walter Cronkite telling us the president had been killed. A very sad day indeed.

I was very young then but I still remember with great sadness.
