1789

A proclamation by President George Washington set aside this date as a day of thanksgiving and prayer to acknowledge the many and signal favors from Almighty God. The proclamation urged, among other things, that "all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection."

1970

A Bolivian dressed as a priest tried to kill Pope Paul VI with a knife shortly after the pope arrived in Manila, Philippines. The 73-year-old pope's life was saved by his private secretary, who pushed the assailant away. The pope escaped injury.

1991

Condoms were handed out to thousands of high school students in Brooklyn and Manhattan in the beginning of a program that was to continue until it covered all 260,000 of the city's high school students. The program, aimed at stemming the spread of AIDS, was adopted by the Board of Education over strong objections by the Roman Catholic Church and some parents.

2000

George W. Bush was certified as the winner of the election for president in Florida. But expected court contests left in doubt whether Republican Bush or Democrat Al Gore would be the victor and the 43rd president of the United States. Gore finally conceded Dec. 14 "for the sake of our unity as a people and the strength of our democracy."
