Supreme Court begins new term with new justice
By AP Wire Service

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is beginning its new term with a new look.
When court convenes Monday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Hispanic justice, will join the eight others.
She replaces Justice David Souter who retired. But this won't be her first time behind the high court bench. Sotomayor joined the court in time to hear a special oral argument last month over campaign finance regulations.
The featured argument on the court's first day will be over how long a suspect's request for a lawyer should remain valid. Other high profile cases come later in the year — including arguments over strict local and state gun control laws.
The justices will hear arguments until the end of April and issue decisions until the end of June.

Fortunately, true justice knows no party. Unfortunately, Conservatism ices the evolution and application of true justice, such as in the Dred Scott decision of 1857.

Conservative or liberal elections do have consequences. Some will smile some will frown.

Stevens will quit at the end of this term. I hope Obama appoints someone younger and more liberal than Sotomajor.

Why is it that every member of the Supreme Court except one is from either Harvard or Yale? Are the rest of the schools in the nation unworthy!
Why is it that 6 out of the 9 justices are practicing Catholics? Is this representative of the demographics of the USA?
Take this--if you graduate from a Law School in Oklahoma at the top of your class, study at Oxford, are a top Appellate Court Judge and receive the Nobel Prize for Justice, your chances of becoming a Supreme Court Justice are nada, nil, negatory.
Why is it that all of the Supreme Court Justices are former Appelate Court Judges? Some of the past greats were not Judges--think Justice Marshall(the first and some say the greatest), Warren,William Rehnquist, Felix Frankfurter, and Louis Brandeis.
This is clear evidence that the current crop of U.S. Senators believe you are not qualified unless you are educated and a part of the northeastern establishment.

In another report it was stated that Justice Sotomayor asked over 40 questions on her 1st day. An engaged, inquisitive Supreme Court Justice will hardly be an embarrassment for the country. Narrow mindedness and ignorance is!

Skeptic...and Thomas, the poorest SPJ in my lifetime never asks a question...because..he's a true believer...us against them..Repubs against the rest of the world....a horrible, horrible excuse of a jurist and sadly always a given on every vote. I wold love to see a non-lawyer, universally respected person who has no political history appointed to the Court. Nowadays the media only exalts "celebrity" so I guess it would have to be some tv character...Judge Judy? Oprah? God help us. We're tv driven, not intelligensia driven. Our loss.

Bin K--were you really born there? Or are you just of the belief that because a man is black, he must be a citizen of Africa rather than the USA?

Yeah, our new justice is quite a prize. Have you seen how she misuses words? It's pathetic. So much for the superiority of Ivy League schools.

Mich098, somehow, I doubt if borninkenya could even find Africa on the map, let alone locate Kenya on a map of Africa.
