Tulsa lawyer elected Oklahoma Bar Association's president for 2010

Tulsa lawyer Allen Smallwood will be the Oklahoma Bar Association's president for 2010.

Smallwood, a criminal defense lawyer, received a bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University in 1972 and a law degree from the University of Tulsa in 1974.

Smallwood is a two-time past president of the Tulsa County Bar Association and the former director of the Tulsa County Bar Foundation. He is a member of the Oklahoma Judicial Nominating Commission.

Smallwood served in the Marine Corps from 1966 to 1968.

The term of current Bar Association President Jon Parsley of Guymon ends Dec. 31.

Elections were held Friday at the group's annual meeting in Oklahoma City, where the 16,000-member group is based.

Tulsan Molly Aspan will be chairwoman of the association's Young Lawyers Division. She is an associate at Hall, Estill, Hardwick, Gable & Nelson in Tulsa. Aspan practices labor and employment defense litigation and provides employment counseling.

She received a law degree from the University of Kansas in 2003.

Deborah Reheard of Eufaula will be president-elect. Mack K. Martin of Oklahoma City will be vice president.

Cleveland County district judge appointed to Court of Civil Appeals

Gov. Brad Henry on Friday appointed Cleveland County District Judge William C. Hetherington Jr. to serve on the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals.

He succeeds Judge Glenn Adams, who retired in September.

Hetherington "has the intellect, integrity and temperament that will make him ideal for the Court of Civil Appeals," the governor said. "It is my pleasure to make this appointment to the bench."

Hetherington has served in Oklahoma's 21st Judicial District since 1992. Before that, he was a special district judge and was in private practice.

He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1970 and received a law degree from Oklahoma City University in 1979.

If he served in 1966 thru 1968 I would like to shake your hand Mr. Smallwood. I have a feeling you participated in the 1968 Tet offensive.
