Inhofe, Coburn speak against current stimulus proposal
In this 2005 file photo, U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (left) listens as U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe speaks at the Oklahoma Press Association's Midwinter Convention. Inhofe and Coburn both spoke out against a massive package of spending and tax cuts Thursday. JOHN CLANTON/Tulsa World File

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn weighed in Thursday against a massive package of spending and tax cuts designed to stimulate the economy.
Joining a group of fellow Republican senators, the two Oklahomans questioned whether many of the areas funded in the $800 billion-plus measure would actually end up providing a much-needed economic boost.
"We know what works," Inhofe said, citing previous packages that succeeded.
He repeated his previous comments of disappointment that spending on infrastructure projects such as highways is not a bigger percentage of the bill.
Citing the package's historic price tag, Inhofe said that each of the 3 million to 4 million jobs expected to be created would cost about $295,000.
Coburn also said spending on certain areas would help but predicted 80 percent of the money in the bill would not stimulate the economy.
"This is about spending money we don't have for things we don't need," he said.
Coburn said cities across Oklahoma have prepared their own lists of projects they hope to get funded.
"Everybody wants their share," he said.
Future generations will be denied wealth, Coburn said, if the bill passes.
"This bill is a generational theft bill," he said.
Others at the press conference spoke of the process used by congressional Democrats so far to advance the bill, a process the Republicans say does not track with the bipartisan approach sought by President Obama.
"We have been shut out," Sen. Pat Roberts
of Kansas said.
Sen. Jon Kyl of Ariz., warned Democrats of the risk they are taking by cramming down a stimulus package without Republican support only to find out it does not work months later.
Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama conceded Republicans have very little chance of changing the package but later expressed hope the ground will shift once the public learns more about the bill.
On Wednesday, the House passed its version by a vote of 244 to 188 without a single Republican vote.

Democrats dont care about future wealth or any wealth. They just want to spread the wealth which leaves no one with any. They dont care what the republicans think. They just want to show them who is in power here. At anyones costs. OB does not care if it is overspending as long as the titles are noted with HISTORIC.

How long will the jobs "created" last? One day, one week, one month, or one year?
I don't think anyone objects to more jobs being created, but can one purchase and furnish a house, or buy a car on one of them? Or will it take two or three of the created jobs to do that?
There also is the presumption that people will be willing and able to fill those "created" jobs.
And the success criteria the entire effort is...?

Fight on guys! You speak for me well. I appreciate the work our Senators are doing. They bring a little Oklahoma common sense to Washington.

Oh really? Then why are we in this fine mess, Senator Inhofe?
How's that buy-out in Pitcher working out for ya? Are the children safe, yet?

"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

Ayo: What the hell? This isn't rocket science:
WE DO NOT HAVE THIS MONEY TO SPEND!!!
WE DO NOT HAVE THIS MONEY TO SPEND!!!
WE DO NOT HAVE THIS MONEY TO SPEND!!!
WE DO NOT HAVE THIS MONEY TO SPEND!!!
The reason Republicans are proposing tax cuts are obvious: 1) They have been shown to work; 2) They DO NOT require deficit spending.
It absolutely does not matter if there is one iota of "good" in this bill: WE DO NOT HAVE THIS MONEY TO SPEND!!!

Come on Nunya
This from the pulpit of the president of the southern Baptist. A "in the tank" Republican hack who has lived for years off the donations of others. Hardly a PhD in economics. Who also said: According to one author, the pastor once responded to a question about biblical references in support of slavery during biblical times by saying, "I feel slavery is a much maligned institution. If we had slavery today we would not have such a welfare problem."

To keep it Biblical; Why do these two continue to kick aganist the bricks? It looks like this bill is going to pass, so why are they not working to bring as much of this money to Oklahoma as possible?

I hear a lot of liberals name calling instead of problem solving. Could it be that you do not have any answers, but can only spew hate? I, for one, want to keep what I have, rather than have it given to others that have not worked for what they need. As far as political parties goes, congress (democrat controlled) was and is responsible for oversight of the banking industry. So why the heck do we want to put more hens in a fox run henhouse?

Maybe it's just me, but everyone seems to want to blame the Republicans for the mess we're in. Weren't the Democrats in majority in the House and Senate during the last 4 years? I didn't take the time to research this, I'm just going from what I think I remember...
I have just a casual interest in politics, but it grows with each year that passes (I'm 30 now).

Their chamber added a ton of pork to the giveaway to the banks - why do they have a problem with this?
Could it be the citizens might actually benefit?

Last two years democrats had congress.
Before that & during the two years they had sufficent control of certain committees to end up being responsible for the mess they caused by blocking reform efforts in committe.
Very little in this that will in fact benefit citizens....

I've looked at the stimulus package. I think that Inhofe and Coburn are correct that there is plenty of wasteful spending. It needs to be shrunk down quite a but to remove the wish list items. I hope they can make an argument without alienating those they need to influence. I would expect the Senate to be much more cautious than House.

AS far as the illegals commit above.. who knows...after all remember illegals are in fact doing even the very jobs we would do and in some cases even darn good pay.

Oil was not the reason for IRAQ.
Thats nuts, considering we can do our own oil and do it with zero loss of life.
As a agnostic person I resent his commits because of the lies he continues... The problems caused by the mortgage meltdown, while it is both parties, it is the democrats who expanded the loosening of it and blocked reform efforts to keep the meltdown from happening.
