Inhofe hopes to stop Gitmo closing
U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe speaks at a State Chamber luncheon at the Crowne Plaza in Tulsa in October. Inhofe recently returned from visiting the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and hopes he and a delegation of other senators can gather enough information to stop the closing of the center. WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, who wants to stop President Obama from shutting down the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, described 110 of the 245 detainees there Monday as "hard core terrorists'' whose home countries will not take them back.
"Those people there want to kill anything that moves that is not Muslim,'' the Oklahoma Republican said in a phone interview on his flight back from visiting the detention center.
And, Inhofe added, if the surge now underway in Afghanistan adds to the number of captured foreign combatants as expected, Guantanamo would be the only place to send those as well.
"There is no place else,'' he said.
Inhofe also spoke of the legal uncertainty the U.S. could face if the detainees were ever transferred from the center, which is located in Cuba, to American soil, even to a prison on a military base.
Evidence that can be used in a military tribunal is not allowed in the U.S. legal system, he said.
A senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Inhofe led a delegation that included Sens. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and David Vitter, R-La. Two others scheduled to go did not make the trip.
He described the group as a "truth squad'' hoping to gather enough information to stop Obama, who signed an order last week to shut down the detention center within a year. Inhofe's interest in the issue increased with renewed attention to a 2-year-old list of potential sites where the detainees could be transferred.
Fort Sill, in southwestern Oklahoma, appeared on that list. Inhofe conceded that chances that Fort Sill would ever be selected "are not that great'' but added Fort Leavenworth, Kan., is not that far away from the state.
He dismissed criticism about keeping detainees at Guantanamo indefinitely.
"If the option is they are there for life or you kill them or send them to Tulsa, Oklahoma, I'd say put them there for life,'' Inhofe said.
In an interview on NBC's "Today Show,'' Obama described his decision to shut down the detention center as the "right thing to do'' that ''ultimately will make us safer.''
"We've already seen in the reaction around the world a different sense of America by taking this action,'' the president said.
Obama conceded he was worried about the possibility that a detainee could be released and then later take part in carrying out an attack.
"I have to make the very best judgments I can make in terms of what's going to keep the American people safe and what's going to uphold our Constitution and traditions of due process,'' he said.
"If we don't uphold our Constitution and our values that over time that will make us less safe and that will be a recruitment tool for organizations like al Qaeda.''

Since military prisons are such a great idea, might I suggest building one at Tinker AFB. Bring it home Oklahoma senator.

FOOLISH thought, Mr. O. H. Obama to shut the Gitmo down. At least try to send them to another country. No one wants these terrorist. Inhofe is correct.

I think it is totally stupid of Inhofe to not want Gitmo closed. If Gitmo was closed it would bring jobs to Oklahoma (since they are eyeing Oklahoma as getting prisoners).
Mr. Inhofe- Bringing military prisons to Oklahoma will bring jobs and money to a state that is already on it's knees for new jobs. Get off your high horse and bring jobs, money, and tax relief to your state!

Knock yourself out Jimmy. If you think a Senator in the minority party can override an executive order from the Commander in Chief, feel free to keep talking.

Seems to me that IS the problem Mr. Inhofe and you cause the term Kangaroo Court to come to mind. Since 1776, our court system has worked just fine. Why do you feel it is too inept to handle these alleged criminals?

those 110 extremists will be killed one way or another, when hate consumes you so much that killing becomes your only answer, death can be their only destiny...lets just hope they dont take innocent lives before that happens.
I am afraid our "civilized" citizens are incapable of making the tough decisions that have to happen in order to deal with extremists.

i know it nots the okie thing to say but, do you know that 90% of these people haven't been charged with anything? Only suspected by Bushco and the boys, no proof of anything.
I am not saying that some of them are not guilty but should they not at least be charged with something and some evidence be provided? Aren;t we the great christian nation that always does everything on the right side of the law and "god"?

Gitmo is essentially a concentration camp. Sure some might be dangerous, but we tried terrorist murderer Timothy McVeigh in our normal courts and that worked out just fine. The only reason it exists is because the Bush administration wanted somewhere they could put people and not apply normal standards of justice and evidence. So Senator Inhofe is in favor of concentration camps. I'm so proud.

This?? This is why you were elected? hehehehehehheheheheeheheheheh
And what enlightened you to this, Inhofe? This from the man whose vocabulary is rampant with phrases such as: "Nazi like ploy", "Global warming hoax", and "environmental thuggery".
This is your new soap box, Inhofe?
Dude, you have no credibility in the real world!
It's going to be an entertaining four years watching this slug slime his nonsense through the Obama administration.

Tony, Timothy McVeigh was a US citizen, none of those Gitmo detainees are US citizens, not to mention they were detained in foreign countries. Since they are not considered foreign combatants associated in anyway with a country militarily, it is very difficult to prosecute them given the difficulty in getting evidence from a hostile territory where witnesses often share the same views as those detainees.

I applaud Senator Inhofe for bringing this up. How soon the folks of this country forget 9/11.
The decision to close Gitmo has not been well thought out but was Obama throwing a bone to his Left wing base. For crying out loud, their home countries don't want these hard cases back home.
Lastly, there are already home grown Muslim extremists in our Federal Pens, we sure don't need any of these radicals on our home soil hoping to get lawyered up and getting an "OJ" type jury to set them free or spreading their poison in our already overcrowded prisons.
Unintended consequenses we need to think about.
I personally don't give a flying fig if other countries like the USA or not. If they fear us and will still do business with us, that works for me.

Like I said Skeptic, maybe now that your liberals are in charge, you guys can sweet talk the extremists into loving their enemies...my guess is after Obama steps aside, things will be worse because liberals are incapable of doing what it takes to defeat extremists.

Another Republican whack-job who needs to grasp the damage that Gitmo has done to America's standing and moral leadership around the world. Kind of ironic since the Republicans profess to be the "moral majority".

Madd_Maxx08: by "doing what it takes" do you mean forsaking American ideals? Do you mean violating international and domestic law? The U.S. used to stand for something but some people (including Inhofe) don't think it stands for anything and continue to try and ruin this country. This whole we should do whatever it takes and torture is okay in this instance fad is one of the most un-American un-thinking things I have ever seen.

Madd_Maxx08,
In this country you're innocent until proven otherwise. They did teach that in Civics, didn't they? So what you're saying is that these people are undesirables, people less than deserving of the rights we all enjoy.
I thought conservatives were about less government power. Yet they roll over and let the federal government imprison people indefinitely on a mere accusation, without access to the due process rights that civilized people have had for centuries.
If the evidence isn't there, the government has no right to hold you. The only reason this camp was set up was so that the government could have a legal black hole. So it could subvert its own laws and ideals. Is that really what you want from your government? If a Democratic president had done it, would you still defend it?

Tulsa Life, it happened when Bush had been in office for 6 months...hardly enough time to do much about it.
Tony Q, they are not US citizens, therefore they are not afforded the rights that you and I share. We tried the Germans after WW2 in Tribunal, but there isnt a world court that can try extremists who commit crimes.

"Those" people. Funny how semantics is determined by your geographic location. Has Inhofe tried and convicted the men who sit in Gitmo after five years awaiting to be CHARGED with something????? Inhofe is an idiot and I can't believe Oklahomans voted for this outdated fearmongering self-centered moron. Here's a message to the world...Not all Oklahomans are as dumb or as ignorant as Inhofe. Here's another message to those of you who think that closing Gitmo is a mistake. YOU CANT JUST PICK AND CHOOSE WHO YOU WANT TO EXILE FROM YOUR COUNTRY. ITS UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND DOWNRIGHT WRONG!!! Anyone who agrees with Inhofe is a moron.

Maybe if we had to place terrorists on American soil we would think TWICE before we just threw them in prison without a trial. Inhofe and everone who agrees with him is NOT...I repeat NOT representative of most Americans. We PROVED it when we elected President Obama. Obama is President/Commander in Chief and he will do as he sees fit. As for the idiots who oppose Obama just because they are sore losers, well, YOU LOST. GET OVER IT OR DO SOMETHING ALREADY>>>All I heard before the election was..."Obama will be assassinated...you mark my words, he will not become President" YEAH WELL GUESS WHAT, HE IS so I guess instead of marking your words you can eat them. M_M, you miss the point.
I don't feel they should be set free. On the contrary, I think they should be adjudicated. But just not there.
Oh Yes, I've heard the reasons from more eloquent people than you about why they can't set foot on American soil. But that's all a spooky Cheneyesque ploy used by a very disfunctional previous administration.
Gitmo has become a "recruiting poster" for terrorist groups around the world. Closing Gitmo is a very symbolic gesture. DUH! And that will help eliminate one more reason to hate America. DUH x 2!
Wake up Barney, put your bullet away and listen to reason for a while. I know it's been 8 years since reason ruled....but let's give it a try.
