Coburn says he'll announce plans for 2010 on June 1
No GOP opponent is expected if he seeks another term.

RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN TICKER
U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn: The senator's comments Monday appear to be the most definite statement he has made on the issue since February 2007, when he offered a "guarantee" he would not run for re-election if a landmark ethics bill became law.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, who has been something of a moving target when it comes to his plans for re-election in 2010, said he will make that announcement June 1.

The Oklahoma Republican revealed that schedule during an appearance at the Monday Meeting, whose monthly sessions draw conservatives in New York.

When asked to give the audience a Web site, Coburn shared his Senate Web site. Then came the teaser.

"I may have a Web site up for a campaign. I don't know," he said. "I will make an announcement June 1 as to my intentions."

Actually, Coburn for Senate 2010 already has a Web site that includes a "More information coming to this site soon!" statement.

The senator's comments Monday appear to be the most definite statement he has made on the issue since February 2007, when he offered a "guarantee" he would not run for re-election if a landmark ethics bill became law.

Coburn backed off that statement a few months later.

Since then, he has insisted — at least publicly — that he is undecided as to whether he will run for a second six-year term.

His 2010 campaign has not been all that active, but money should not be a factor. Coburn is an incumbent, and incumbents historically have the upper hand in fundraising.

Moreover, he would not be expected to draw a Republican challenger, and so far no Democrat has stepped forward to announce a challenge.

Unlike Inhofe, Coburn generally takes principled stands. He also has the flexibility to deal occasionally with the other side when they have a proposal that will benefit the American people. He does not denigrate, dehumanize or namecall his opponents like Inhofe. He behaves like a gentleman and a professional generally.

That said, I do disagree with many of the positions he has taken, but I do so respectfully. The rest of the remaining southern republicans could certainly take a lesson from him and lower their shrill tone.

"Principled stands" lose Oklahoma millions!! If Bob Kerr had that attitude, Oklahoma would still be a land-locked State!!

A voice that challenges out of control spending and earmarks--we need the good doctor to stay on board.

I agree with Mich098 in that Senator Coburn votes mainly on principles, but can "work across the aisle" to help prevent stalemate and get things passed.
Senator Coburn is a man of integrity and fights "pork barrel" projects on behalf of the tax payers. While this may cost Oklahoma appropriations, it does not escalate the national debt crisis spiraling out of control. On this issue he is not "straddling the fence" by talking against out of control spending and earmarks, but seeking pork projects on the other hand.
Additionally, Senator Coburn is strongly against illegal immigration and amnesty, and Oklahoma needs a man of backbone on this position.

Attaching a rider to a credit card bill to allow guns in national parks suggests he is buttering up the Oklahoma electorate.

Looks like Rooster Coburn will run again.

Dr. One-Term Tom has grown to love Washington. He's running again, and you can bet the ranch on it.

I wish he would go back to doctoring. In his present job he can't keep his Hippocratic Oath of "First do no harm."

Probably the worst Senator ever elected from Oklahoma since Inhofe will claim the cleanup of Tar Creek as his only positive legacy. Dr. Tom has been a bomb throwing obstructionist who actually thinks he and he alone acts as God's only true believer in holding up legislation and appointments on religious grounds. True, he is not as mean-spirited or openly extremist as Inhofe, but that is no reason to laud him simply for acting the way decent people should behave. The bar Inhofe has set for even temperment is extremely low.

Am I the only one that finds this statement from the article, which is a quote from Coburn to be interesting?:

"...when he offered a "guarantee" he would not run for re-election if a landmark ethics bill became law."

Hmm...does Coburn have an issue with ethics? YIKES!
