Inhofe weighs in on Obama birth site
He encourages those with questions, but he's focused on other issues.

Inhofe

Read more about the Obama birth certificate controversy at Factcheck.org, a nonpartisan, nonprofit site operated by the annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, weighing in on an issue the White House described as "fictional nonsense,'' said Monday he did not know whether President Obama is a citizen of the United States and qualified by birth to be president.

"I believe those people who are concerned about his birth certificate, about whether he is a citizen and qualified I encourage them to do that,'' the Oklahoma Republican said of a group pursuing the issue.

Inhofe, however, stressed repeatedly during a brief interview that is not an issue he has taken on.

"My concern is to deal with things I can deal with now, which is stopping the cap and trade, keeping Gitmo open and stopping socialized medicine,'' he said.

Still, Inhofe's stance on the Obama birth certificate issue has drawn attention.

Comments by the senator were reported by Politico in a story on how Republican lawmakers are expecting to hear from a "small but vocal crowd of right-wing activists who refuse to believe that President Barack Obama was born in the United States.''

Politico also reported the office of Oklahoma's other senator, Republican Tom Coburn, received documents from the group on the issue. Coburn declined to comment.

Recently Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del., was jeered at a town hall meeting after responding to a questioner and stating that Obama was a U.S. citizen. That story has been reported by several news outlets, and the video of the meeting has been posted on the Internet.

Referred to as "birthers,'' the group refuses to drop the issue of Obama's birth despite evidence that he was born in Hawaii.

"I don't discourage them from going ahead and pursuing that,'' Inhofe said.

"That is something that in my heart I don't feel I can do anything about, but I can do something about, and I hope in your story that you will mention, the three things that I can affect and will affect.''

Asked if he personally thinks there is a chance President Obama is not qualified by birth to be the president, Inhofe said: "You know I have never gone through and read all the stuff on that so I don't know. I just haven't taken that one on.''

Following the phone interview, Inhofe staff called and provided the following statement:

"I am not a legal expert on this subject,'' the senator said. "Clearly, I gave President Obama the benefit of the doubt by certifying the election.

"If there are legal experts who have concerns, I would encourage them to continue looking into it. Unless and until additional information is provided, I will continue to focus on issues related to preventing President Obama's liberal agenda from changing the face of America.''

In Honolulu, officials again are confirming that Obama was born in Hawaii. Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukino said Monday she has seen the original birth records that verify Obama was born in Hawaii and is a "natural-born American citizen."

Fukino issued a similar press release Oct. 31.

State law bars release of a certified birth certificate to anyone who does not have a tangible interest.

During his daily briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked if there is anything that will make the birthers go away.

"No,'' Gibbs said.

"I mean, the God's honest truth is no."

Gibbs said more than a year ago he asked that Obama's birth certificate be put on the Internet "because Lord knows, you got a birth certificate and you put it on the Internet, what else could be the story?''

Gibbs said even DNA wouldn't assuage those who refuse to believe the president was born in the U.S.

"But I have news for them and for all of us,'' he said. "The president was born in Honolulu, Hawaii . He's a citizen.''

I'm a Republican. Thanks, Inhofe, for letting this distraction use up the public's energy and time when the country should be concentrating on solving its economic problems. 'Preciate it.

I have to admit I did think "he's wearing jeans" when I seen his picture on TV. I guess because I hadn't seen him wearing jeans before. In fact the thought crossed my mind. He is human.
As far as the "birthers". What a waste of time.

Let's say Obama actually was born in a hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1961.

What ELSE could the original Birth Certificate tell us that may be a problem for BHObama, Jr.:

Wonder what Obama is hiding?

It's easy to solve.

Just release the original TYPED, state-certified birth certificate.

There's SOMETHING on the original typed birth certificate that OBAMA wants embargoed.

FOREVER.

What is it?

Race. Caucasian?

Father's name. Blank? Or,......maybe NOT BHObama, Sr..........

which corrodes the authenticity of "Dreams of My Father,"

and re-classifies BHO, Jr.'s autobiography from autobiography to:

FICTION.

Mother's name ?

Baby's name ?

Syphillis test administered ?

Ages of the parent(s) ?

Certifying Doctor ?

We're waiting.....

Webmeister, born in Hawaii in 1961 is the only item important on the birth certificate that relates to the legitimacy of Obama as the POTUS, period.

I am not a republican, but I do expect Inhofe to do his job and make decisions based on what is best for the state of Oklahoma and its citizens. That is why people elected him. They trusted him to do that, and although I didn't vote for him, he is there, and I trust him to do that. So, why doesn't he do the right thing and say 'You know, the state of Hawaii has authenticated the birth certificate, therefore Obama is an American citizen -- now let's talk about the economy." No republican will stand up to these people and say "I'm sorry, but you're wrong." Tonight, an anchor of a news program asked another analyst what Inhofe was thinking -- and the answer "Well, Inhofe is from Okalhoma." This is our representation? It makes me sad.

Inhofe started out on the national scene by initially blaming the Murrah bomb on Arabs, then moved to climate change denier, now American birth denier. His next step will be to claim that hurricanes are controled from Area 51.

I'm conservative and I've been very uneasy and critical of Obama's economic and foreign policies ... however I find this right-wing paranoia very distasteful (along with Michael Savage and Anne Coulter's cynicism). All the right-wingers going with this birth certificate crap are no better than the angry liberals who demanded Bush's impeachment during his second term and part of his first. For all the liberals who think Bush stole election 2000, and the conservatives who think Obama is not a legitimate citizen need to (as the Eagles would say) get over it.

TheFoundOgle, you are wrong. Palin, McCain and Biden among others submitted their medical records. Obama thinks he is soooo special that he just submitted a letter from his doctor.

As for birth certificates, I don't know if the others submitted their birth certificates.

I just assumed that people running for public office had to submit their certificates. There are a lot of jobs and admissions to schools and colleges require a person's birth certificate being submitted. So I don't know why the political elite would get a free ride.

As Dr. Phil says: "People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing." If Obama would show his birth certificate, this could all be put to rest. He refuses to do so, so it does make me wonder about him.

Inhofe's brain is pickled from too much booze.

Everybody go to factcheck dot org and his birth certificate has been verified. Detailed pictures with raised seal and number. Where are the Republican Leaders with a high IQ and not these venom spewing crazed idiots that have seized the Republican Party. Ann Coulter and these other idiots on Fox News don't speak for any Republicans I know.

Oh this Birth certificate thing was perpetrated by Fox News! That should say enough!!! They most definitely play to the lowest common denominator!

Heavens... that "Webmeister" character is full tilt looney tunes.

But even more irritating is the Tulsa World "Marketplace" ad on the right with the animated automated typing and the fake cursor jumping around. That's the most obnoxious thing I've ever encountered on the internet. [ok... not quite as irritating as that picture of Mr. Inhofe]

Dr. FeelGood, I suspect that you are writing prescriptions to yourself.

Responsible Parent, I suggest sitting down with your children, and reading the words of the Hawaii State Health Director together: "I ... have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago."

I had to produce a Certified Birth Certificate for both of my children (one born in IL and one in KY) when I enrolled them in school. I am NOT speaking about a COPY of one, either. COPIES WERE NOT ACCEPTED. The Certified Certificate had to be notarized by a licensed Notary Public and stamped with the seal of the County Court Clerks in both states and these seals ARE NOT merely ink seals. So WHY does THIS president NOT have to provide the same DETAILED Birth Certificate as I had to provide for my children to be enrolled in school? I also had to produce a Certified Birth Certificate in order to get my driver's license changed. Something just does NOT add up because BOTH sides of my family have been in the United States for over 200 years and we KNOW his family has not!!

One more thing - my father was born in 1908 before Birth Certificates were issued and before births had to be registered. When he died in 1966, we could NOT bury him without a Death Certificate, of course. We had to produce a Birth Certificate in order to get a Death Certificate - he could not have died if he was never born. We were lucky that two of my great aunts were still living near us, one of whom was at the house the day my father was born. They had to swear under oath that my father WAS born!

Considering that I had to send for Certified Birth Certificates for my children and myself and that we had to PROVE my father was born in order to bury him - without the president producing a Certified Birth Certificate and NOT a COPY of one (which anyone could write), in my opinion, this president was never even born! WHY should the rules be any different? After all, we are just common middle-class citizens and he is SUPPOSED to be the President of the United States! Something is WRONG!!
