McDonald's closes eatery on turnpike near Bristow

From Wayne Greene's Blog:
Turnpike authority to drivers: Pick a tree
OKLAHOMA CITY — The McDonald's restaurant along the eastbound lanes of the Turner Turnpike near Bristow was set to close for good at midnight Thursday night.
McDonald's decided not to renew its lease with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, agency spokesman Jack Damrill said.
The restaurant will be demolished and the ramps will be closed, he said.
"We are not going to put anything there," Damrill said. "It just does not make a lot of money."
The Turnpike Authority checked with other potential vendors, who showed no interest in the site, he said.
The McDonald's restaurant on the Turner Turnpike near Stroud has been remodeled to accommodate more customers, Damrill said.
Travelers who need to stop along the Turner Turnpike can use the facilities at the Stroud location, said Tim Stewart, the Turnpike Authority's deputy director.
Facilities also are available at the Chandler exit, Stewart said.

I miss Stuckey's when I'm traveling. I have fond memories of them when our family used to travel when I was a kid. Not that McDonalds is all bad, but the "McDonaldization" of our highways makes me a little wistful...

This would be a excellent opportunity for SONIC. Build some standalone restrooms and the drive-in. I would prefer a oklahoma company like sonic that serves great food instead of mc d's anyway. Comeone sonic. Sell us some tots on the pike.

I miss Stucky's too, CR. But Bill has a great idea with Sonic. I just wish they would keep these toll resturants a little cleaner. I'm scared to go inside.

I just wish we had rest areas with full bathroom facilities that every other state except Oklahoma seems to have!

Will the restroom still be available? Since the service station closed, McD's was at least the last toilet facility between Stroud and Tulsa.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Commission uses Okienomics which is different from regular economics. Okienomics does not follow the law of supply and demand. Instead, it raises prices when it has fewer customers. It's like the accountant who points out "Look at the money we save if we go out of business."
The end result is that those in charge will reward themselves with more pay for the great job that they are doing.

I agree with the comments above, put in a Sonic. Or Sonic could build it as a walk-in eating place with rest rooms, instead of their usual drive-in, but either way would be good.
I was never excited about having McDonalds on the turnpikes. I also remember Stuckey's when I was a child as my family would stop in one from time to time when we were traveling. Back when I was a child (1950s & 1960s), it was a big treat to just get to eat out.

The McDonalds between Tulsa and Joplin is not the largest in the world and has not been for a few years.

russia and china and one location in florida are larger but vinita still in the top 5 or 10. i opened the store on the cimarron in 87' and it was a lot nicer and cleaner than the howard johnsons or gibble gas stations at the time. worked with some outstanding folk from the surrounding communities like pawnee, morrisson, jennings, etc.

Ridiculous. The OTA just jacked up fares and now they're eliminating a restroom.
Eastbound, there's a restroom at the Phillips in Chandler, then 14 miles farther at the Midway, and now nothing until you get to Tulsa. I would happily pay a little more in tolls if they would put in decent rest areas like you find in almost every other state in the union.

My traveling urinal is a large mouthed plastic jar.
I don't have to stop to pee in filthy bathrooms. I guess I've always been lucky pertaining to the bowel movement. Just thought I'd share this tidbit. Hope nobody was eating at the time.

What in the World! lol. I'm sorry to paint a picture such as that. The only other solution is to buy a dog collar that fits and do things on the side of the road, and bark if a OHP comes by.
