School audits can deter fraud
But finding the money to pay for them is not a simple task these days.

Legislators and the state auditor agree that random state audits of small school districts will spot trouble early and save taxpayers millions of dollars. The only drawback is money to pay for them.

"Every time we go into one where there's been abuse, there's always a lack of proper internal controls, because all of these should have been caught before they were there," state Auditor and Inspector Steve Burrage said.

"If you had the proper controls in place, I'm not saying you could stop the fraud, but you could catch it earlier."

House Bill 1592 requires the Auditor's Office to perform as many as four random audits on small school districts each year. Average daily attendance at the schools cannot exceed 1,000.

Wonder how long it took these geniuses to figure this one out????

Oversight is the keyword here. If you are never accountable to someone, people will take advantage of the situation.

The first audit needs to take place in Sperry Public Schools. There is no question that the past two school administrations have not followed board directives and may have spent school funds illegally. Board members Cindy Wilson and Jonetta Selvidge have worked hard investigating and going through records at the administration office. The parents and patrons of Sperry need thank these two for their hard work and for making sure that the day-to-day operations of the school are done in a legal manner.

Car, I've read about the morons on the school board in Sperry, and I think you are spot on with suggesting an audit.
