Many of Oklahoma's jails are being inspected once a year instead of quarterly due to state budget cuts.

State Health Department officials say it's not a problem, but a civil rights attorney and law enforcement officials disagree.

Don Garrison, director of the state Health Department Jail Inspection Division, said most of his employees were assigned duties in other areas within the Health Department to prevent layoffs.

Division inspectors look at the nearly 200 county and municipal jails, 10-day lockups and 12-hour holding facilities in the state.

The safety and welfare of inmates is just as important as any others. After all we wouldn't want to make an of them rich by virtue of a civil rights lawsuit due to health and welfare issues would we. Though in jail they too have certain rights to be housed in sanitary and safe conditions.

Centrist hit it on the head, just make sure they can't get out. They aren't in there to be treated fairly and decently, they are in there for a reason.

As long as they cannot get out is all that really matters to citizens.

I'd rather they cut back on jail inspections than restaurant inspections, medical clinics and food handlers. Sometimes you have to prioritize.

If we have to cut back, this is certainly an area where we can, as long as the locks and doors are in good working condition.

When are you people going to finally take a stand against this type of gross mismanagement and unlect the people you chose to represent you? These government hacks do not have the final say about anything; the people do. It seems that the "people" just want to sit around and complain rather than sending emails, etc. to their representatives. That's the good old boy system in OK at work.

Some people dont relize that most inspections are for the inmates rights I mean the shower curtains have to be a certain height and have towel racks and the drink be a certain temp. and food a certain temp. And floors clean and free of trash inspect what everyone on the outside does

I really don't understand this. The health department is not doing the inspections due to budgetary constraints and the jail inspectors are being assigned to different areas om the health department? What is the cost of doing jail inspections besides the manpower?
