Epidemiologist skeptical about flu vaccine data
State official frustrated with dosage delivery.
By JIM MYERS World Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — Oklahoma state epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley, whose predictions about federal officials' swine flu vaccination schedule proved correct, expressed similar doubts Wednesday about their latest update on the pandemic.
"I think I'm going to maintain some healthy skepticism, and we'll just evaluate it week by week,'' she said.
Bradley described the weekly frustrations and challenges experienced by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as it has attempted to respond to earlier federal government reports on how many doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine the state would get, only to find out later that a fraction of that number actually would be available.
"So first we get our hopes up, and then we have them dashed,'' Bradley said.
Only 167,000 doses of the flu vaccine have arrived in a state with about 3.5 million residents, she said.
Even that number doesn't tell the whole story, she added.
All of the first two shipments were made up of the nasal-mist form of the vaccine, she said, adding that none of those doses could be provided to pregnant women, one of the priority groups designated for early doses.
More than 50 percent of the doses shipped to Oklahoma so far have been in the nasal form, Bradley said.
She said that percentage hampered the state's ability to reach out to priority groups.
"That affects our distribution strategy,'' Bradley said.
When asked how her own predictions seemed to be more on point than
those of federal officials, she said her skepticism was based on earlier reports that yields from production companies were not as good as expected.
"That was a very early warning sign,'' Bradley said.
In addition, she said, past experiences led her to question the rosier predictions coming from the federal officials.
"There had been a disconnect in their message,'' Bradley said.
She made her comments when asked to respond to the latest update by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.
Speaking to reporters, Napolitano asked for the public's understanding about how fluid the situation remains, and Sebelius said officials shared the frustrations of Americans who want to be vaccinated.
Sebelius said the government is working to fill the gap between the demand for the vaccine and the supply.
Production has been accelerated, and sites have been visited to ensure that any previous glitches blamed on the lower output in the past are being addressed, she said.
In the last seven days, Sebelius said, 9 million doses of the vaccine have been produced.
That brings the total to 23 million doses, she said.

Luck we are dealing with a rather selectively prodding virus. If this were a small pox attack, we would all be toast.
The N1H1 virus is the best biological preparedness exercise we could have possibly hoped for and look, our country is failing miserably.

Problem is that regular flu is still killing and more dangerous then swine flu yet it gets no attention. The swine flu is a joke because it is no different then regular flu just another strain. Lets put this into perspective
last year 36000 people died from the regular flu
Their is only 2 months left in the year and only 1000 have died from swine flu meaning that its will probably be around 1500.
Now the realistic number that the media does not report and no one is panicking over because of ignorance but its normal. Its October and over 25,000 have already died from the regular flu or type A.
So...
1000 (oct) swine flu death= oh no end of the world Obama help us.
25,000 (oct) seasonal flu/Type A deaths= seasonal what... no one told me to fear that. Type A isn't that a herpes?
Lets not forget all the other bugs out there that have killed more this year

Kazillions of flu shots are produced by the same method EVERY YEAR. There is nothing unique or new about this vaccine or the way it is made, dork74.

Yes, oldrusty, Obama has to personally inspect, approve and administer each individual dose of vaccine.
Take your meds.

lensecap, the Obama daughters have already received their flu shots.
"The administration posted the answer on its Web site on Tuesday: President Obama and his wife, Michelle, will “wait until the needs of the priority groups” — including young people under 24, pregnant women and people with underlying illnesses — have been met. But daughters Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, fall within the priority groups, and they received their injections last week from the White House doctor, who applied for the vaccine through the District of Columbia Department of Health “using the same process as every other vaccination site in the District.”
Oops! You were wrong. Wonder what else you could be wrong about?
Try reading the package insert for ANY drug and you'll find scary-sounding stuff that they are required to put in there. And you know what? If you are allergic to eggs and you eat eggs, well, that can kill you, too.
Do a little research--use The Googles.

"How do you expect people to know not to take the vaccine in this case?"
I expect that people will read the GREAT BIG INFORMATION SHEET that you are given BEFORE you receive the shot that CLEARLY states if you are allergic to eggs, DON'T take the shot.

And I suspect, I am in the minority here in that I DO think for myself.

I have handed out thousands of those sheets myself at flu clinics. The nurses also ASK about allergies before they give the shot.

I'm not sure that I want a vaccine that hasn't been tested. If the companies that are producing it don't even know how much they can produce and/or how long it will take to produce it how can they possibly know that it's safe and effective?

1,000 swine flu deaths so far and 100 of those were under 18. That means 900 people were over age 18. Where are the statistics on the ages of those 900? (90% of the deaths) Yet only the kids are being vaccinated.
This seems a little odd to me.

Fluvirin is the brand name for the vaccine that most areas in Tulsa are getting. The package insert can be readily found in .PDF on the web with a simple search on google or you can ask a pharmacist for it. In the insert it says that Fluvirin has NOT been tested for safety in PREGNANT women, Nursing mothers or children under 4. It has NOT been evaluated for CANCER or FERTILITY problems and can cause neurological disorders such as Gillion Berret syndrome. If you are allergic to eggs it CAN KILL YOU.
And for anyone who has heard there is mercury in the vaccines but thinks it's a rumor or conspiracy theory... IT'S IN THE INSERT. It's called Thimerasol and is supposedly a preservative.
Go read the insert for yourself.
Obama will not be getting it, nor will his daughters. That was in the news last week.

psychedleikrelik,
None of what I said is my opinion. I took it all directly from the insert. I missed that story about Obama and his kids getting their shots. But so what. Have you read the insert? If you eat eggs and you're allergic, yes it will kill you. But I would think you would KNOW not to do that. How do you expect people to know not to take the vaccine in this case? And if the insert says it hasn't been tested for safety in Pregnant women or children under 4 then why are these people being put at the front of the line? Google isn't the end all be all friend. Think for yourself.

great... do you let them know there is mercury in there too? Do you let them know that the insert says it's not tested for safety in pregnant women, nursing mothers, kids under 4, and isn't effective in geriatric patients? Do you let them know about the risk of Gillon Beret syndrome (albeit rare)? What about the fact that the vaccine has not been tested for carcinogens or fertility problems? I don't want you to think I'm attacking you. I commented on this story only because 9 out of 10 (my estimate) people getting this shot are standing in line at some clinic, pharmacy, or wal-mart and they are not aware of the risks because the news is telling them the exactly the opposite from what the insert says. In some cases (not locally that I know of) cops, firefighters, dentists and other unqualified personnel are being "deputized" to administer the vaccine. I went to the wal-greens to get an insert and they would only give me a flier on how good it is for you. So my question really is why is that? If the insert says it's not safe for pregnant women or infants then why are they first in line according to the news? You argue that there are lots of scary things in the inserts for all kinds of medications. So does that mean you should ignore it?
