Obama appoints David Boren to intelligence post

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama announced the appointment Wednesday of University of Oklahoma President David Boren as a co-chairman of an intelligence advisory board.
"David is a longtime champion of intelligence reform," said Obama, who tapped former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., as the other co-chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board.
"I will be looking for the board to provide me with objective, independent and nonpartisan counsel as we work to strengthen our intelligence community and our national security."
The president cited Boren's previous service as the longest-serving chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Oklahoman's legislation that created an independent inspector general at the CIA and reformed oversight of covert actions.
Boren called Obama's announcement a "unique rollout" of the board appointments.
He said the president also sent intelligence agencies a message saying that he expected them to cooperate with the board and provide it with the information needed.
"That was very good," Boren said. "That really empowered us."
During his first discussions with the White House about taking the job, Boren said he made it clear that he was not interested in preparing reports that would end up gathering dust on a shelf.
He said Obama assured him that the board's work would not suffer that fate.
In addition to acting as an auditor on intelligence activities, Boren said, the board, which
dates to the Eisenhower administration, also can be used by presidents as a sounding board.
After endorsing Obama during last year's presidential race, Boren was an adviser to his campaign on national security and foreign policy.
At that time, he cited Obama's "good judgment" in warning against the Iraq war and advised him on the importance of building partnerships and sharing burdens with other countries.
Boren said President George W. Bush's administration had depended too much on the military in foreign affairs, describing that approach as a huge mistake.
"This part-time advisory role, which is uncompensated, will in no way alter my plans to remain as president of the University of Oklahoma," Boren said. "I see this appointment as a chance to perform my duty as a citizen to serve our country."
Boren, 68, was Oklahoma's governor from 1975 to 1979. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1979 to 1994.
His son, U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Okla., is on the House Intelligence Committee.

Well, if they're in digital format, they won't gather dust. They may not be read, but they won't gather dust.

Forgetting for a second about the second gulf war in Iraq, most anyone can agree that the first gulf war launched by President George Herbert Walker Bush was right & just. This was was about freeing Kuwait, and preventing a dictator from controlling 60% of the worlds oil reserves.
Then US Senator David Boren voted against the first gulf war.
Says a lot about Senator Boren.

borninKenya: It breaks my heart to think there are really people like you out there polluting my great party. Whenever people ask me what happened to the Republicans, I point out people like you, who seem to think in terms of what they're against instead of what they're for.

Hmm, part time advisory role to one of the most important avenues of government...INTELLIGENCE. And he remains at the helm at OU. Don't mind the guy, or the University of Oklahoma. Just wondering if he will be reviewing intelligence issues in between pressing campus matters like monitoring Greek parties, fending off faculty salary gripes and deciding which restaurant deserves a contract in the Student Union. I know it has always been a part time role, so I guess I am wondering this about everyone who has served. How does a guy sitting in Oklahoma, who runs a major university as CEO...have time for that and time to review and advise on national security and intelligence issues? Weird.
OH, and I doubt it is too "objective." He is going to advise in the way he believes is best, but he'd never show up his son. His advice will be spot-on to what will keep his son in office.
