WASHINGTON — Just before another short-term extension on highway programs moved forward, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe pulled the plug Thursday on his own efforts to pass a longer-term extension and protect Oklahoma and other states from more losses in road money.

All week the Oklahoma Republican had worked with fellow lawmakers in both the House and the Senate on a deal for a six-month extension, but another continuing resolution passed to take the current transportation law until Dec. 18.

"This is terrible for Oklahomans, and it is being repeated across the nation,'' Inhofe said.

He said the short-term extension, the second passed so far, will fund highway programs at levels 33 percent lower than what states had been receiving.

That approach, he said, translates into a monthly loss of $1 billion for states.

He said Oklahoma will continue to lose $15 million a month, adding that kills the state's ability to plan ahead. Individual projects will have to be put off, Inhofe said, and that means the construction season will end early.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., declined to comment.

According to Inhofe, there was plenty of blame to go around for what he viewed as an outrageous failure.

He
said Democrats opposed the use of $8 billion from the previously passed bailout legislation.

Earlier, a key House Democratic chairman at least publicly was refusing to move off his demand for an extension shorter than six months as a way to keep pressure on all to continue working on a massive, multiyear measure.

On Wednesday, however, Inhofe launched what he described as a last-ditch effort on the six-month extension, saying his major obstacle turned out to be his fellow Senate Republican conservatives.

"I kind of jumped onto these people who were opposing this because each one of the individuals that was opposing it had voted for the $700 billion bailout and the $300 billion mortgage bailout,'' he said.

Inhofe said he questioned why they were pushing their conservative stance when it only came to infrastructure spending.

"So we got into a little bit of an argument,'' he said.

Inhofe singled out opposition from Sen. Judd Gregg, R-N.H., the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.

When asked for a response, Gregg's press aide referred to a budget bulletin on the committee Web site. That bulletin stated the six-month extension sought by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, where Inhofe serves as the top Republican, would have not just extended the current transportation programs but would have expanded them.

"If the six-month expansion bill is enacted, the highway program will, like a vampire, end up sucking the lifeblood out of the General Fund to the tune of $268 billion over the 2008-2019 period,'' it stated.

In the end, Inhofe also was racing against the clock as the current month-long continuing resolution that extended current law runs out this weekend. He conceded time just ran out.

Officials within the Obama administration and key players on transportation issues in Congress earlier had hoped to win approval of an 18-month extension, but that approach immediately ran into trouble in the House.

"The good news is that I see hope on the horizon,'' Inhofe said. "In the next few days, you can bet I will once again be reaching out to Democrats and Republicans to finally craft a deal to make sure this doesn't happen again.''

"Our state is failing to thrive because of our poor representation in Washington, not any deficit of greed."

Truth fairy, not that there's anything wrong with that. We are failing to thrive? I guess you mean unlike those under the enlightened leadership of Ms Boxer and Ms. Feinstein (CA-12% unemployment, bankrupt) or maybe the president's home state of Illinois (10.2%, Blago, Burris, etc.) Maybe you mean Michigan...oops again. BTW, good luck with the Great Pumpkin tomorrow night!

This excision of road funds was passed under the last administration, with Inhofe back then supporting Bush's wish for a glimmer of fiscal sanity amid the Niagara of Federal spending.

You can tell Inhofe has dentures because he's toothless when it comes to influence in Washington. And he can't reverse what he helped to put in motion! Inhofe is a joke without a punch line. Sane, intelligent people look at him and say, "Huh?"

"....saying his major obstacle turned out to be at least two of his fellow Senate Republican conservatives." - Inhofe

Apparently, it's hard to break the "NO" habit even when it hurts those within your own party. I wonder if it was Coburn who burned Inhofe?

Inhofe made a big show of saying we don't need a stimulus package and now he's whining because there's not enough money for road projects.

It's time for the old Fart to retire.

James takes care of his energy executive buddies and he shows up for his gun extremists. However, what has he ever done for the average Okie? Nada!

He blows a lot of smoke. He has no morals. He goes to the highest bidder. However, it really doesn't matter. He is just an excellent leech on the jugular of his electorate. Fortunately, he will not last more than 2-3 more terms. I wonder how the world that he has fabricated will look like by then. God, gays, and guns! James' identification of what is important in our world. He is a very smart politian. He knows his people. Simple and shallow minded.

if your are unhappy about this atricle, why don't you ask questions about why Senator Inhofe rejected creating jobs here in Tulsa, rejected saving 30 to 50 percent on energy cost for home and business owners, approved another $20 million plus contaract for Tar Creek, endorsed moving hazardous materials in roads, in federal road projects like is now being done in Tulsa, rejected lowering emissions from car to ZERO. See why the Tulsa World never published this.

coburn and inhofe have no good will on capital hill, and they burn their bridges, so if you want to know why things are the way they are, those that have voted them look in the mirror.

The issue isn't whether or not WE think Inhofe is doing a good job. The issue is the rest of the country thinks this guy is a joke, and he has no influence in congress anymore. I mean, remember, this is the guy who said after the Murrah bombing, on national television, that there shouldn't be too many casualties because a government employee wouldn't be at their desk at 9:00, they'd be off having coffee somewhere. He has criticized the International Order of the Red Cross, one of the most respected groups on the planet, one which we would expect to ensure that our boys are treated correctly if they became POW's. He also said "Global warming is still considered to be a theory and has not come close to being sufficiently proven". So what is proof? When Miami, Manhattan, and New Orleans are underwater? Recently weather scientists gave a group of mathematicians a set of 150 numbers and asked them if there was any trend of any kind in there, or if the numbers were fairly unrelated. The mathematicians stated that the trend was an increase in the value of the numbers. The mathematicians were then informed that the 150 numbers were the average global temperature for the last 150 years. In the last 8 years he has received $662,506 from oil companies. He also received $152,800 from coal companies. This is who is giving him the money he needs to get re-elected, and so that's who he's going to support, using "scientific" data from "think tanks" that are funded by oil companies. In his speeches on global warming, he was cited studies that had nothing to do with what he was claiming they said, misquoted people, and even twisted the facts of a study to reverse what it said. He has been refuted multiple times by his own colleagues. He stated that 9/11 was divine retribution from God. In other words, he was saying WE DESERVED IT.
Now, whether or not he represents what we believe, or if we agree with him, he has lost his credibility and it is time for him to retire. I actually was talking with a friend the other day and they asked "is that guy as much of a nutcase as he sounds" (exact quote). If he can't push for Oklahoma, it's time we found someone with some more clout. Someone who the rest of the country ignores as a "nutcase". Because if they feel that way about him, he will acomplish nothing.

What about those car-free cities that exist all over Europe? A quarter of households in Britain live without a car. Vauban in Germany is one of the largest car-free neighborhoods in Europe, home to more than 5,000 people. Groningen, the Netherlands' capital of cycling, has the largest car-free center in Europe: half-pedestrianized, entirely closed to through traffic, with 16,500 residents, three-quarters of whom have no car in the household. Forty percent of all journeys within the city are made by bicycleets

Inhofe isn't exactly the "last flat-earther".

There are plenty of dumb Okies who think he's doing a " good job" and "Wish we had more in Congress like" him....

Of course, Inhofe is much smarter than many of his constituents. He's a master of pandering to their ignorance to line his pockets, and those of his rich pals.

TRUTH FAIRY
If you could take your head out of your rear long enough, you would realize the climate bill is ALL ABOUT $$$$, not about climate. Inhofe doesn't oppose it because he has nothing better to do. He opposses it because he understands the financial ramifications of the bill will DEVISTATE the US economy far more than anything has thus far. The science on global warming is refuted and upheld on a weekly basis, BY SCIENTISTS. They cannot agree and the US will bear the greatest financial burden of the bill (trillions of dollars)- while China is full steam ahead with all of its polluting. It isn't some "flat earth" belief on his part- he's just not buying in to America's economic death. Meanwhile , Obama fans the flames.
