Political Notebook: Different bedfellows

Politics can make for strange bedfellows, but sometimes they are just different.

Oklahoma's two U.S. senators, both conservative Republicans, are on opposite sides in Kansas' Senate primary race.

Last March, Sen. Tom Coburn endorsed Rep. Jerry Moran, who described Coburn as a "conservative leader'' on issues such as spending.

Last week, Sen. Jim Inhofe endorsed Rep. Todd Tiahrt, who described Inhofe as a "conservative champion'' and cited his opposition to climate change legislation.

And can a political story on the Oklahomans these days be complete without a reference to the C Street townhouse in Washington, where Coburn has lived, dined and counseled?

In a story on the Kansas race, Politico questioned whether Moran's closer ties with the C Street group helped win him Coburn's support.

A Republican by any other name: Two other Oklahoma Republicans in Congress — Reps. Tom Cole and Mary Fallin — have picked sides in a New York congressional race.

And neither backed the GOP candidate, Dede Scozzafava.

Both threw their support instead to the Conservative Party candidate, Doug Hoffman.

Cole said in a statement that "the vagaries of local politics'' allowed two Republicans on the special election ballot.

Perhaps he explained it better when he said Hoffman "is right'' on the critical issues the country faces.

Scozzafava issued a statement Saturday releasing her supporters.
