Lawmakers bunk outside to show empathy with seniors
By BARBARA HOBEROCK World Capitol Bureau

OKLAHOMA CITY — Two state senators planned to spend Tuesday night outside the Capitol to show their solidarity with older Oklahomans who have been left out in the cold because of budget cuts.
Sens. Kenneth Corn, D-Poteau, and Tom Ivester, D-Elk City, said they would camp outside the Capitol to protest a Commission for Human Services decision to cut $7.4 million from a program that provides meals to older residents.
The cuts were made in response to declining state revenue. Most agencies began the fiscal year facing additional cuts of 7 percent. Additional cuts of 5 percent came in each of the last three months, and agencies have been told that the reductions will continue until the end of the fiscal year, on June 30.
The pair arrived at the Capitol's south steps with their tent about 8:15 p.m.
Sen. Debbe Leftwich, D-Oklahoma City, showed up to lend moral support but didn't plan to spend the night.
Corn, who is running for lieutenant governor, said leaders in the Republican-controlled Legislature have failed to address the situation with senior nutrition programs. He has called for a special session to restore the funding.
Corn said he and Ivester are trying to send a message, not engage in a publicity stunt.
"We don't believe senior citizens should be shut out in the cold, and they should be a priority in state government," he said.
Sen. Mike Johnson, R-Kingfisher, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, dismissed the camp-out.
"The
senators know that the decision to cut senior nutrition by almost 30 percent was an executive agency decision over which neither Republican nor Democrat members of the Legislature have control," he said.
Meanwhile, the Senate Rural Republican Caucus called on Gov. Brad Henry on Tuesday to use 5 percent of his discretionary stimulus funds to restore $5.26 million to the program. Henry has $105.2 million in federal stimulus funding to use at his discretion. His office has said the money has been committed to other programs.
Meanwhile, older Oklahomans are expected to rally from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday on second floor of the Capitol to protest the cuts.

I wonder is the governor's other programs have anything to do with ACORN projects?

Meals on Wheels of Metro Tulsa is prepared to help those seniors who are homebound and within our service area. We are private non-profit, so not affected by the budget cuts. We will work with the funded Senior Nutrition program to the extent of our resources (volunteers and funds from meal recipients/families and private donation).
We will help, but people need to realize that no one can provide service if the resources aren't there. I hope families of seniors will step up to the plate, not offload their family members onto the government, i.e., the rest of society. Our family members are OUR job first.

Oldrusty, you really hit a sour note with the worthless ACORN'S waste of money and resources that could certainly help the elderly now.

Garf56,
The left likes to blame state tax cuts for reducing the nutrition program on the Republicans. The fact of the matter is the Democrats controlled the Senate when those tax cuts were made and Gov. Henry sign it.
Families when able need to step up and help those family members in need. You shouldn't rely on government to do everything for you. Those that do should be ashamed.

Garf56,
Your last post of 8:47 you mention 30 percent cut to the nutrition program, it was actually 42 percent. And your right they should have spread it around a little more.

Garf56,
I agree those that need help should get it. Those with families nearby that are able and don't should be proscuted for neglect. If that is even possible. If it's not possible then those family members should publicly shamed.
That may be cold but it's what I think.

Nothing more than grandstanding liberal politicians pandering to old people for votes, how despicable! I'm surprised the Republicans didn't think of this!

So, If Ron Ballew gets old, breaks his neck and becomes a quadraplegic, we should just let him get on Social Security, MEDICARE, Medicade and fend for himself?
Works for me.
Good luck to Sen. Kenneth Corn and Sen. Tom Ivester

Both of these Democrat Senators have been an elected offical for many years. Corn is term limited and is running for Lt. Gov. Why are they just now concerned about this? Have they tried to pull some money to off set meal programs for seniors from the rat hole of the OEA ?
Why nooooooooo! And by the way, a Democrat is the governor, why has he not tried to fix the problem?

The meals also go to the home bound and saves the State thousands if these seniors go to a nursing home early! There is more than meals at the centers, it is people helping people with many issues. Also it is a safety net for some who do not have close family near by.

The Government picks on elderly because the are easy pray. Most can not (or won't) fend for themselves. They don't have other family members to help them & if the State helps them they take everything they own, ie homes, money, etc. I have seen this over & over again. Everyone says how much they love their parents, grandparents, etc we need to be on the steps as well protesting for the elderly that can't participant. Remember we will be elderly one day ourselves and we won't have anyone to stand up for us. People like Ron sure won't as it seems like he won't be teaching his kids to respect the elderly.

I am so proud we have some senators in this state that do care about our seniors. I ask everyone to contact Gov Henry and demand a special session be called to provide funding for the senior nutrition centers,, it maybe a matter of life and death for some.

Now I see idiots do exist in Oklahoma,, and you are indeed one of them Ron. I have volunteered many hours in our local senior nutrition center, and many of the seniors that attend are not capeable of preparing a nutritious meal for themselves. Also just because they have social security and medicare, some of them have medications that cost almost as much as their entire ss pension, that are not covered by medicare. You seem much like some of the greedy state reps we have in office, if it's not going in your pocket it isn't worth your time.

What TW didn't mention here, Ron Ballew, is that this cut eliminates funding for 780,000 meals served to the elderly and homebound, statewide. In their last years, many seniors lose the ability to physically provide nourishment for themselves, and often forget to eat at all.
These programs can be a life preserver for the elderly and disabled, and allow them to stay in their homes and out of institutional care.

Thanks, Garf56, for your contribution of time and heart to our deserving seniors.
I witnessed my own parents "failure to thrive" in their late years, despite all my efforts, or the availability of food.
People like you are the saving grace for this proud "greatest generation",
that often feel a compromise of their dignity in being unable to help themselves.
Bless you.

They didn't need to do it when the dems controled the Legislature,, simple fact is the dems are trying to find funding and help for the seniors,, unlike the party of NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

I don't think people understand that the senior nutrition program is funded through DHS. DHS took a 5% cut in state funds just like all state programs, BUT they passed along a 30% cut in the senior program. I think there are other DHS programs that should have been cut before the seniors,, such as paying for lazy people to sit at home and watch OPRA instead of working and paying taxes to help fund, worthwhile programs.

My view,
I agree when possible families, should take care of their own. But I can tell more than a few stories of seniors where I volunteer that have no family left, or they simply do not care.
One in particular is a lady that was raised out here in western Oklahoma, she lived on a family farm and survived the worst of times in the dust bowl. She has no surviving relatives, her ss pension is only $734 per month. She has parkinsons and other ailments, her medication above what medicare pays is 430.00 which leaves her pennyless. She is not the only case like this, I ask all to help these people in anyway possible, they are what made Oklahoma the Great state it is.
