Veterans and supporters ask Coburn to drop hold on bill
LONE HOLDOUT
Tom Coburn:
His Senate Web site states that he believes the bill would discriminate against some veterans and duplicate services.

WASHINGTON — Veterans and their supporters called on U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn on Friday to drop his hold and allow a vote on a bill to offer assistance and improve benefits to wounded veterans and their caregivers.
The Oklahoma Republican declined to respond.
Without identifying Coburn by name, Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, chairman of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, said a single senator is delaying vital benefits for veterans.
"I would say that we cannot now turn our backs on the obligation to care for those who fought,'' Akaka said.
"When we, as a body, vote to send American troops to war, we are promising to take care of them when they return. I firmly believe the cost of veterans' benefits and services is a true cost of war and must be treated as such.''
Key provisions of the legislation would provide a stipend and other support for caregivers of severely disabled veterans, improve health care offered by the Veterans Administration, expand service for those in rural areas, ensure equal access to female veterans and address homelessness among veterans.
Akaka mentioned Oklahoma as one of the states that would benefit from the provisions targeting veterans in rural areas.
He also singled out the provisions on caregivers, saying that in some cases they have to quit their jobs to care for a disabled veteran. That can lead to depression and lack of health care for the caregivers, Akaka said.
Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska, said providing support for veterans is an obligation of lawmakers.
"Yet, even as Veterans Day approaches, a member of the Senate has placed a hold on this bill, denying better service for our veterans,'' Begich said, adding there is no excuse for not supporting veterans and their caregivers.
"Colleagues, I cannot imagine why this hold has been placed on this legislation.''
Begich identified Coburn by name and urged that he allow the Senate to proceed with the bill.
Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., noted the legislation was approved unanimously months ago in committee and has strong bipartisan support.
"Our veterans are too important to play politics with,'' Tester said.
The American Legion, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Wounded Warrior Project and other groups have launched an effort to get a vote scheduled on the bill.
Steve Robertson, legislative director of The American Legion, said he understands Coburn has the right to place a hold on any bill under the Senate's customs.
Robertson said, however, putting a hold on this particular bill seems to be an abuse of that system.
If lawmakers can support billion-dollar bailouts, he said, they should be able to support a bill that is so important to the nation's veterans and their families.
"No one can ever fully repay these veterans or their families for the hardships, pain and suffering sustained from their military service,'' stated a Nov. 2 letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., which was signed by officials from more than a dozen organizations.
"However, at minimum, we must ensure that VA provides high-quality health care services for this nation's sick and disabled veterans, including the unique health care needs of women, as well as support the family caregivers on whom they depend.''
Although Coburn did not respond to a request for a comment, his Senate Web site had a post stating he believes the bill would discriminate against veterans from previous wars and duplicate an existing program that helps veterans care for themselves.
It also stated that Coburn has an amendment that deals with benefits for all veterans.

this is one of the stupidiest stories that TW has allowed to be carried. it doesn't state WHY he is opposed. Jim Meyers should go back to Journalism 101.
Here is another hack job story but TW won't cover it but written in the same vein: "Obama hates the dead troops in Ft Hood because of his failure to address the tragedy immediately in a recent speech with Indians" Come on!
I seriously doubt that Coburn hates the troops. Must be some earmark in the bill that has absolutely no tie to veterans benefits (as almost all legislation does).

Don't be too sure about that, what_was_is.
It was the NRA that put Coburn in office.

Here, off his website:
"November 5, 2009
Facts about the Veterans Caregiver Bill
Facts about S. 1963 – Caregiver and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act
1. Dr. Coburn is NOT opposing the veterans caregiver bill, he merely wants to debate and amend the legislation to improve it.
2. The veteran caregiver bill currently discriminates against Vietnam veterans, Gulf War I veterans, and World War II veterans.
3. The veteran caregiver bill duplicates an existing program that has been providing benefits for decades to veterans to take care of themselves in their homes rather than nursing homes or hospitals.
4. Unlike the veteran caregiver bill, Dr. Coburn’s amendment increases benefits for all veterans, and reduces wasteful spending in order to guarantee that veterans today and in the future will receive the benefits they have earned, including these new caregiver benefits."
So the Coburn wants to be frugal and pass smart legislation. And as Gomer would say, "surprise, surprise, surprise," he doesn't hate the troops.
And no, I don't know the senator, never given him money, and i don't work for him.

Calloy,
i'm a vet and i follow all the vet-related issues closely, and i'm not lock-step with Coburn numerous issues. But i do pay taxes and like them to be spent smartly. You don't?
Here is something you can comment on. Why did we just spend nearly a trillion dollars on work/employment stimulus,..and today we continue our launch to 10.2 unemployment? Must be amatuer hour on this tread. yawn.

He just believes that only millionares and the corporate employed should have healthcare insurance. Everyone else should be beggars, so good C-street christians like himself can feel holy when they toss us a crumb.

truth fairy,
I just would suggest one thing, whatever Congress passes, they, along with their families must live under the same thing.
With that in mind, i didn't understand the whole "Coburn doesnt' hate the troops...he just believes millionaires..yada yada yada.."...connection.
With that appropriately noted,..i don't have enough info to comment on the healthcare plan. However, it does seem that the increasing costs are spending our small businesses into the ground, where they can't compete with global markets. Not everyone can work at Taco Bell (which food i'm addicted to, by the way.)

nellpost,
given the fact that neither Coburn or Inhofe are Representatives,...that is a question better suited for those names that actually are.
As for the implied lameness of our Senators,...well,..their demeanor and vote record must be generally in accord with state sentiments, otherwise,..they wouldn't be elected. You must be in Puerto Rico?

"So the Coburn wants to be frugal and pass smart legislation."
According to Coburn, that is. That's brilliant cheez-whiz.
- In what way SPECIFICALLY does the bill discriminate against veterans? Veterans themselves seem to be fine with it, so I want to ask you to tell me.
- Wow. Coburn also says he can increase benefits for veterans AND reduce spending at the same time. He must be some kind of wizard...or, he's full of ****. Again, dazzle us with some specifics.
Coburn is an obstructionist. He does not care about veterans or anybody else. He believes his job is to wreck things and, if he had any more power, he'd be far worse than he is right now.

Calloy,
Well,...you being a marine vet is your first problem. The most you guys can do is read a mortar launcher saying "this end up". lol Just kidding. Thanks for your service!
With that jokingly said..
The cut-and-paste job speaks for itself: "...divert money from unspent economic and job stimulus programs to cover costs of new benefits for veterans and their families." One question here is ....WHY is it unspent as people still lose jobs?? Maybe because the stimulus plan isn't working???...who knows.
It is at least worth a debate as a funding source before passage

Under the present program to assist vets in their home, they get a caregiver for FIVE HOURS A WEEK.
This is almost as bad as nothing at all.
Part of my job is arranging this care and I can tell you these wonderful vets need and deserve much more care.
There is no question that assistance to allow them to stay in their own homes as long as possible is much more cost-effective than allowing their condition to deteriorate to the point where they must be institutionalized.

My comments about Coburn, hmmm, were referring to his attitude towards health insurance. At a town hall this summer one of his constituents told her story of how her husband was denied neccessary treatment for cancer by their insurance company, and they couldn't possibly afford to pay for it. Coburn's response was that the people in her church and community should come to her aid. His solution to people that can't afford the current outrageous premiums is to go on medicaid, which pretty much requires a declaration of poverty.

Calloy, oops,...called you a marine vet by mistake when you are army,...now i have to apologize to the marines...haha just kidding.
truth fairy,...i guess its time for the proverbial "where you stand depends on where you sit." As such, if i was a vet wrapped in depends in a vet home, i would be hollering for any new benefit i could get. no doubt. the larger question for all to ponder, is...how are we to pay for this?? How much further into debt will we allow our country to go?($11,900,000,000,000.00) Better yet, how much further will China allow our country to go?
Or do we even care? Will the new classes evolve into the sick versus the healthy ala Soylent Green?

These things should have never become an issue. We treat our Veterans badly. Have since WW2 when we promised we'd take care of our soldiers. All we did was spit in their faces for defending the USA. Coburn and the rest of them should be hung from a high branch.

That's the thing, hmmm. We're already paying for it, were just not getting it.
Our medicare contributions were porked out with corporate subsidies in 2003,
and less than half of our premiums for private insurance go to actual medical benefits.
We can do better, 37 other countries in the world are.

Coburn is an embarrasment to this state, and never votes for the common man. This hold is no exception, he is devoid of any common sense whatsoever.
