Book-signing campaign brings Huckabee to town

A little more than a year ago, Mike Huckabee was touring the country to sell his candidacy for president.

He's still touring, but now he's touting his latest book.

Huckabee will sign copies of "A Simple Christmas" and his other six books for an hour beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Borders bookstore, 8015 S. Yale Ave.

"A book tour is a little more intense, actually," Huckabee said Monday by telephone from Wichita.

"We're covering more miles. But with a campaign, you have to play defense about 70 percent of time. The great thing about a book tour is that you're out there doing something very positive."

The former Arkansas governor has played very little defense since falling short of the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. His weekly television program on Fox News and thrice-daily reports on ABC Radio are keeping him in front of the public.

"I'm loving it," Huckabee said. "Broadcasting was really my first job, at age 14.

"It's time-consuming, but I'm enjoying it a lot. The TV show is way too much fun so much fun I'm almost thinking if I'm not careful Roger Ailes (president of Fox News Channel and chairman of Fox Television Stations Group) will think he doesn't need to pay me."

Huckabee uses his platform to criticize the President Barack Obama's administration as well as fellow Republicans.

"Republicans would be stupid to abandon our conservative principles," he said. "When we run as conservatives, we win. More important is to do what we say we're going to do."

Democrats, he said, are trying to do too much.

"They continue to want to micromanage and tinker, and every time they try these gigantic programs, it scares business and makes business hunker down and lay people off."

Huckabee said "A Simple Christmas" is a collection of stories from his own life that illustrate what the holiday means to him.

"People see Christmas through the sanitized church version," he said. "I think the real power is through what actually took place. How out of something that looks so uncoordinated came one of the greatest event in human history."

A new edition of Huckabee's 2008 book "Do the Right Thing" is now available in paperback.

Great, I would like to meet him. Like you Huckabee but the Republicans need to moderate.

Republican--why bother. I can hear the same stuff he's spouting in this book, absolutely free,
just by switching from NPR to a variety of A.M radio
hate jockeys.

I like the guy.

He would still be a excellent cabinet member when the GOP wins the election in 2012.

Wish I could be there. He's a good guy. Never any hate from him for anybody--he was even gracious to Bill Maher, more than I could manage!

Oh, and he plays the bass. ;-)

I got a phony "survey" taped call from him that asked a bunch of loaded questions in an attempt to elicit anti-abortion answers then a follow-up pitch for donations. He plays the phony "good guy" role as well as anyone. Like Coburn he really thinks he's God's messenger on Earth.

I only see hatred from liberals...isn't that odd?

PS: You don't have to listen to the robocalls. I don't. Even from people I support.

Nothing wrong with being a messenger of God, something all us can do. I wish McCain would have chosen Huckabee as his running mate. Perhaps it might have turned out differently.

RE: "Never any hate from him for anybody"petite fleur

You obviously have not paid attention to his "thrice daily updates".

This guy is a hypocrite who makes "slick Willie" Clinton look like a choir boy.
