Obama: Decision soon on troops for Afghanistan
President Barack Obama is welcomed by Japan's Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama at Kantei. Charles Dharapak/AP Photo

TOKYO — President Barack Obama, facing withering criticism for a prolonged decision-making process on Afghanistan, asserted Friday he's doesn't want the next move to be seen as an "open-ended commitment."
In a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, Obama also said he was bent on "getting this right." He denied that his administration has been dithering and said that whatever policy change he announces must be aimed at protecting America from terrorist networks.
Opening a weeklong trip to Asia, Obama said the United States and Japan must "find ways to renew and refresh the alliance for the 21st century."
Hatoyama said the two leaders had agreed to spend the next year refining the nearly 50-year-old treaty that defines relations between the two World War II adversaries.
"Both Yukio and I were elected on the promise of change," Obama said. "But there should be no doubt that as we lead our nations in a new direction, our alliance will endure and our efforts will be focused so that it will be even stronger in meeting the challenges of the 21st century."
With Obama weighing a new strategy for Afghanistan, Hatoyama said Japan would end a refueling mission for the U.S. military. But he promised $5 billion in aid for Afghan civilian needs such as schools, agriculture and police.
The new Japanese leader also vowed to cooperate with the United States on combatting climate change and nuclear proliferation.
The trip came as the Obama administration was preparing to announce later Friday that the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, would be moved from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison to New York for a civilian trial. Without confirming the details, Obama said Mohammed "will be subject to the most exacting demands of justice."
On Afghanistan, Obama said he was not waiting for any new information. Rather, he said, he wants to be sure he strikes the right balance before committing more U.S. troops and billions of dollars to the 8-year-old conflict.
On a stop at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska on his way to Asia, Obama told a military audience he will commit more forces to Afghanistan only if it is vital to U.S. interests and receives public support.
"I will not risk your lives unless it is necessary to America's vital interests," Obama told the troops.
"And if it is necessary," he said, "the United States of America will have your back. We'll give you the strategy and the clear mission you deserve. We'll give you the equipment and support you need to get the job done. And that includes public support back home."
Obama and Hatoyama hope to shore up relations after the prime minister was elected on a platform of asserting greater Japanese independence in its dealings with the U.S.
Obama said the U.S. and Japan would work quickly to resolve a dispute over American military bases on Okinawa, one that Washington thought was resolved three years ago.
Hatoyama said the issue must be settled quickly because delay would only cause it to fester. The comment seemed to suggest he was moving closer to the U.S. position.
The prime minister's remarks were similar to those made by U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates during a recent trip to Tokyo. Hatoyama had said previously that he wanted to wait until possibly next year to resolve the issue of the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.
Hatoyama has suggested moving the base off Okinawa altogether, while the U.S. wants to move it to a more remote location on the island, as part of a 2006 agreement on relocating 47,000 American troops in Japan.
Obama is on a mission to assure America's place in relations with a rapidly changing Asia that is reordering itself around China's surging economic and diplomatic clout. Obama's chief goal, the White House has said, is to demonstrate U.S. commitment to the region.
Obama also will travel to Singapore for meetings with Southeast Asian leaders, and then to China and South Korea. Many governments are keen to see a revitalized U.S. engagement in part to counterbalance China, and even a newly powerful Beijing says it welcomes a continuing U.S. role in the region.
Japan, long billed by Washington as the cornerstone of U.S. Asia policy, is caught up in these shifts. Hatoyama came to power calling for a more equal partnership with Washington and a more positive embrace of China, which will soon supplant Japan as the world's No. 2 economy.
In a pre-trip interview with Japan's NHK network, Obama sought to minimize any friction and likened the election of Hatoyama and his Democratic Party of Japan after nearly 50 years of rule by another party to a "political earthquake."
"I think that it is perfectly appropriate for the new government to want to re-examine how to move forward in a new environment," Obama said. "I don't think anybody expects that the U.S.-Japan relationship would be the same now as it was 50 years ago or 30 years ago or 20 years ago."
Associated Press White House Correspondent Jennifer Loven contributed to this report.

I can't believe you finally said uppity--the unspoken underlying attitude of all the anti Obama rhetoric. And of course you wouldn't want to address the actual article of Japan and the US concerns over nuclear weapons, economy and climate issues.

At long last we have a POTUS who is insisting that there is a plan for ending our involvement in Afghanistan before committing more soldiers lives. He's listening to Colin Powell.

Words from our President, ""And if it is necessary," he said, "the United States of America will have your back."
If it is necessary? Mr. President it is necessary and it is your responsibility to have the back of our troops. Now step up and do it--Get in Or Get out.

ra,
There have been plans galore for every possible contingency for months now. We finally have a President who is willing to leave fighting men and women out flapping in the breeze while he pushes through a domestic agenda, recognizing that whatever he does in Afghanistan will peel off support for that agenda from one wing or other of the Democrats. The day after healthcare and cap and tax are either passed or irrevocably delayed for a year, he will announce that he has figured out what to do about Afghanistan.

Justun,
We have a Commander In Chief that ponders whether he should have the back of the troops and whether he should provide a clear mission and resources. Are you kidding me? Not much to cheer about there Justun. How about this one--2-4-6-8, who do we see capitulate?

Talk about hate, all the libs yesterday were so filled with rage over the comments I made about my Nancy Pelosi target. No different than the targets of Bush and the bumper stickers I remember with the bullseye on Bush's face. They reported my comment and had it pulled because I didn't agree with them.
They call themselves open minded intellectuals, yet they act like spoiled little kindergarten snot nose wimps who cry when they don't get their way. The conservatives on this forum read all posts, but the liberals either report your comments or put you on ignore. Guess those open minds aren't as open as they say. Probably a good thing they aren't open because then I would feel a huge draft from the air blowing straight through.
I have never seen such a group of America hating individuals continue to blame this country for the problems of the world. They blame the US for all the pollution, all the wars, all the starving people, all the hate of the Muslims, all the greed, all the poor of the world, all the crime, all the drugs and so many more things. The US is not the only country in the world - HELLO.
Most of these left wing nuts have never traveled outside of the US because if they did they would have a different view on almost every single topic I mentioned above. They sit over here in their glass houses on their high horse and judge the morality of the masses based on their so called vast knowledge of everything. With their wisdom so much greater than the ordinary person, they decide what is good for you or not good for you based on their emotions and their feel good thoughts.
Example, if they don't like guns, they think all guns should be outlawed. If they believe a serial rapist has had a terrible childhood, then he should be rehabilitated and let loose only to rape again. I love how many liberals stood in support of Roman Polanski and said how great a person he was and how wonderful he is, just never mind he raped a young girl a long time ago and then fled the country.
These same people will constantly state their love of this country on this forum, yet their actions show us their true character as they stand idly by and support a Socialist President who is on the fast track to bankrupting our country, taking away are freedom of choice, taking away our hard earned money and giving it to people who won't work, telling us we are going to have to use a certain insurance and if we don't we will be made to pay a penalty.
These same people call our troops murderers and criminals because they have gone into a war zone and actually done what we sent them there to do. They continually cite the First Amendment when making their argument, but if someone disagrees with their opinion then they want to pass the Fairness Doctrine in congress to squash any differing opinion.
These same liberal people are the ones who want us to stop deporting illegal aliens from our country. They believe that we cannot live without them and our country will just stop, nobody will get McDonald's french fries, no lawns will be mowed, no houses will be built, and no maids will be available to clean. This is far from reality as the cemetaries throughout this country are filled with irreplaceable people.

They bash the large and small oil companies in this country and call them evil and greedy, when in fact US oil companies only control about 6% of the world's petroleum reserves. That hardly paints the picture of them as greedy with such a small percentage. They want us to stop using all fossil fuels and believe that we should change to clean energy, yet these energies they speak of don't exist and won't exist for who knows how many more years. They believe that by stopping us from using fossil fuels that a new renewable green energy source will miraculously appear from thin air and solve our problems - not reality. They blame our cars for polluting the air, yet they can be seen driving huge gas guzzling vehichles, boating at the lake, and living in huge homes with a large carbon footprint(example Al Gore's 14000sq ft home).
They are the classic example of "Do as I say, not as I do".
They do all of this in the name "Liberalism" and call it forward progress, but it is in reality only steps closer to complete and total government control of everything we do and the loss of our personal choice.
I am not buying the bogus bill of goods they are trying to sell the American people.

I find it interesting that Barry is taking his time to make this important decision because "he wants to get it right". Well, that is understandable.
However, why was Barry's attitude so different when he wanted legislation passed by Congress? The "Cap and Trade" bill, the "Health Care" bill, and the "Stimulus Package". Remember when all those were new and fresh? Barry wanted them passed in a day or two because they were so important. No matter that the Representatives and Senators didn't even have time to read the bills- they had to be decided NOW.
Yet, the Afghan decision must be carefully thought over- (which by the way, I agree with). However the facts are already in and probably won't change- so, he needs to make a decision. NOW.
