Leaders disagree on using savings
Gov. Brad Henry says more budget cuts will jeopardize services.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Gov. Brad Henry and legislative leaders, who so far have worked together through the state's revenue crisis, disagree on how much of the state's savings account should be used to deal with this fiscal year's budget, which is on track to come in about $1 billion short of estimates.
Republican legislative leaders want to hold off on tapping most of the state's ''rainy day'' fund and cut state agencies more deeply instead. They want to keep much of the nearly $600 million in the fund in reserve to deal with the 2011 fiscal year, which starts July 1.
Henry prefers to use most of the rainy day fund to get through this fiscal year. Deeper cuts could jeopardize core services, he said.
Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn Coffee, R-Oklahoma City, said steeper cuts are needed than the across-the-board 5 percent cuts in monthly allocations to state agencies that have been ordered since August.

I think they need to do a little bit of both, use some rainy day funds for core services but make cuts in non-core services. There is no telling how long it might be before our economy improves. We must keep some emergency money back.

Oh my! I can distinctly remember this same senator saying Oklahoma should refuse to accept stimulus funds as they we a putting our grandchildren in debt. Now, this senator is hoarding, nest egging, and protecting those funds as a lifeline for the states budget crisis.
It's also interesting to see the Republican caucus using the states budget crisis to force painful cuts in critical core services. State agencies responsible for corrections, education human services, law enforcement are being used as tools to fulfill the Republican leaderships goal of reducing the size of state government. Reducing the size of government using the blood of those Oklahoma citizens who will suffer the most from their sacrifices.
Now the truth has been exposed. The Republican legislature leadership is only interest is reducing the size of state government for political purposes. They care not and have no interest in representing the best interest of the people they represent. Suffering has now become a tool of "Rove style" divisive politics. If only those who suffer the most were voters. But then again these coyotes know the poor and most vulnerable rarely if ever vote.

FW, I'm sure glad you are one of the more articulate writers in this forum and don't have to resort to namecalling to get your point across.

Governor Henry could have saved a quarter million per year by vetoing HB-1595 which passed this year. That's the bill which harrasses and intimidates women considering an abortion by posting their answers to intensely personal questions on the internet. It is presently being challenged in court.

Okiedokie, I agree but Henry probably thought that is what the people in this state wanted since it voted so Red. The Democrats in this state are so much like the Republicans.
Maybe next time people will think before they vote Republican.
If this isn't an emergency for the elderly and poor and the children, I don't know what is.

I say us some of it for the more pressing needs. I am not for using it all to pander to a specific group like teachers.
If people would do the same as the State and keep some money saved "for a rainy day" and not spend it on impulse buying, our social programs would not be taxed to the limit the way they are.
If you don't have the money to spend, you should cut back and try to put some back, also.

Mr Henry needs to grow a back bone and go after the DHS and cut their budget so that they get back to what they are suppose to do instead of what they have become. That budget alone would save millions of dollars. WHen you have a "supervisor" in the tulsa office with no children trying to tell other people how to care for their children and referring to themselves as the "supervisor from Hell" then these positions need to be eliminated. But Mr Henry doesn't have what it takes to go against this department without leader ship and nearing the nazi stage.

What we need is a more balanced legislature. We need legislatures who are willing to work together for all citizens in the state.

Oh I know. I'm not that naive. It's all about the party agenda, not the best interests of the citizens. Just party agenda's.

OK, lets see, the Republicans want to cut everybody (but them) and keep all the money. The governor wants to use some of the money, he didn't say all of it did he? Sounds like the way it usually goes to me. Are they wanting to keep it forever or for another million dollar road? Sooner or later its going to be spent, we won't be our of trouble next year either. Oh, I'm sure they want to sit down with the governor and work together...slap me now is that a recording!...lol I'm sure what ever they all decide we'll ALL be very happy...lol

Wow, all of the previous comments are great!
A lot of good ideas from the people who provide the funds.
Now if those who spend it could be so sensible...

Gotta love the endless spending that these clowns are doing. The good thing is that it will soon run out and they will be forced to actually become responsible for their so called government. Most will simply retire to the beach leaving the rest of you folks to pay. Good old boys at work.

kyote, What really needs to be eliminated is welfare. This would save millions upon millions. Every month I see more and more people, most of whom are more able to work than myself, buying carts full of groceries and paying for them with their "welfare credit card", taxpayer money. This is an embarrassment on our society. And the more kids they have the more $$ they receive. What in the h@## is wrong with this nation?!!!!!
