Inhofe bid to thwart Gitmo transfer killed

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate killed a proposal Tuesday by Sen. Jim Inhofe that was designed to make it at least more difficult for the Obama administration to transfer detainees held at Guantanamo Bay to U.S. soil.

By a 57-43 vote, the Senate tabled the Oklahoma Republican's amendment to a major military spending bill.

Inhofe, who opposes President Barack Obama's plan to shut down the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said he was disheartened by the vote.

"Despite the fact that similar legislation had overwhelmingly passed the Senate three times in the past, 47 Democrat senators changed their position on this issue," he said, accusing those who switched of bending to pressure from the Obama administration.

Inhofe said the vote sets the stage for military facilities around the country to hold Guantanamo Bay detainees temporarily or permanently.

Three key members of the Obama administration had signed a letter to legislative leaders expressing opposition to Inhofe's language, which would have barred the use of funds in the bill to construct or modify a facility to hold anyone now housed at Guantanamo Bay.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Attorney General Eric Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano wrote that the president and others, including both Republicans and Democrats, are convinced that closing the Guantanamo Bay facility is in the national security interests of the U.S.

"Al Qaeda has repeatedly used the existence of the facility as a recruitment tool," they stated. "We acknowledge that closing Guantanamo has proven difficult, but that is not a reason for the Congress to preclude this important national security objective."

A team is assessing the suitability of a maximum security facility in Thomson, Ill., as a detention center for certain Guantanamo Bay detainees, and last week the administration announced that it will prosecute alleged Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack conspirators in federal court in New York, just blocks from where the World Trade Center towers once stood.

Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., pointed out that a federal takeover of the prison in his state could create as many as 3,000 jobs in an area that has been struggling economically.

"It would be a dramatic infusion into the local economy," he said.

Durbin also dismissed concerns that Guantanamo Bay detainees could not be tried in a U.S. court because of security issues.

GOP = frightened children.

Isn't the best way to demonstrate that the terrorists haven't won to use our criminal justice system against them, rather than give up and declare that our system just isn't up to the task? Granted, the task is much more difficult now that we have to deal with all the problems caused by Bush's 8 years of lawlessness.

What I don't understand is why conservatives pretend to be so macho and tough while also acting like a thing as simple as trying a suspect in court is a danger to us all.

'lawmakers should ensure the places where the suspects are held are as secure as possible.'

I say kudos to Sen. Inhoffe for trying to keep Americans safe. The POTUS sure isn't. Why try to keep TERRORISTS secure as possible. This is a huge mistake. There is a perfectly good prison in Gitmo to try the TERRORISTS. In a federal court there will be information from the CIA, FBI, etc. that should not be known to the public. They are NOT criminals. They should NOT be tried in a criminal court. They should be tried like the TERRORISTS they are. Obummer is putting everyone on American soil at risk.

FYI about Inhofe.

I attend the Watch Party for Dewey Bartlett and they introduced Inhofe, he stayed about 20 minutes. But instead of talking about the victory and the great night, he started talking about the Clintons and Obama and how they are making shambled of this country, on, and on and on.
Doesn't this guy get it, we are tired of bickering and want solutions. Stop blaming people, do your job and shut up.

Tulsa and Oklahoma it is time for new representation, Jim has got to go

Thanks for the effort Senator, but I could have told you that Hussein will not tolerate any more of his minions possibly suffering the fate of the DC sniper who took it in the arm last week.

By bringing the jihadi's to the US, he's hoping that all the evidence, including KSM's own confession w/b thrown out and they w/b free to fill any future cabinet vacancies.

Well said Guillermo.
Instead of constantly whining, wailing and screaming about the flaws of the other party, why not work toward resolving some of the issues?

From what I've seen and read, all they ever offer is more of what was done during the previous administration.
Are they morons?
It's pretty clear to the rest of the world that that was not an agenda that can succeed or continue.

Most of our current strife is because of that agenda. If you want to correct a problem and improve the future, you don't do it by repeating the same behavior that caused the problems.

Duh, Reg! That way Hussein can feign "innocence" or "it's out of my hands" when evidence is deemed inadmissable because it came via KSM's lardness being submerged like a turkey leg into a grease vat at the fair.

This whole thing is nothing but a ploy to put the prior administration's activities on trial. Why else would the USS Cole bombers not be subject to the same circus?

I'll say it again. Hussein doesn't dig his Muslim minions subjected to any form of scrutiny. If you don't think so, why is he dragging his feet regarding the Ft Hood jihadi Hasan in spite of mounting evidence the freak plotted to do what he did for countless months, yet came right out of the gate last summer chiding the New Haven cops for confronting his professor chum without any info at all?

Okierose, then lets get on with the trial and get it over with. Do you think the last Potus was keeping us safe by keep terrorist alive? If they have done something to be in Gbay, then let’s bring them to justice and get rid of them already.

How would any of you like it if someone from another country came in and took one of your family members and held them without any communication, a trial, or any update on their condition. We are no better then the terrorist when we hold people without charging them with a crime. That is not what our country was founded on.

Ft Hood?
One man committed horrible acts that left far too many families in pain and mourning.

How is our President responsible for this?
From what I've read, there are many in positions of authority within the military that should have seen the red flags and warning signs this man was waving about.

Yes, he needs to pay for his crimes, but a study of this case needs to bring about some changes that will help prevent it from happening again.

Are you blaming our president for not immediately murdering the murderer?
Obsessed?

BTW, many activities of the prior administration SHOULD be on trial. They did create a whole lot of "New Rules" and many of those are clear violation of "existing" rules.

I think our current president has tried to avoid prosecuting the previous administration for clear violations. While I think they should be held accountable, I agree with the president that there is already too much division in our country. It's sad that holding our leaders accountable would only add to that division.

Can you liberals give me your best argument as to why it’s a good idea to take a foreign prisoner captured on a battle field in a war and try them in a US civilian federal court that is designed for US citizens?

US criminals are presumed innocent until proven guilty. They are read their Miranda rights, they have the right to remain silent, they have a right to lawyer, they have a right to have a speedy trial, they are not to be tortured and forced to confess. None of those constitutional protections were afforded to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed.

I would really like to know how trying this terrorist war criminal in a civilian federal court is preferable over a military tribunal court that is designed specifically to handle the cases of war criminals?

I'd rather not get into a "liberal vs conservative" word battle.

Wouldn't it be better to simply be humans with different points of view?

Personally, I think our previous administration SHOULD be held accountable for their actions.
I also think the prisoners at GITMO should be held accountable for theirs.
Many, too many, people were held for long periods of time with no representation or recourse.
That's wrong.
If there is evidence of their guilt - try them and get it over with - something that should have been done years ago.
If there is no evidence, we have no right to endlessly deprive them of their freedom and their loved ones of their presence in their lives.

Our enemies deserve justice, not witch trials.
The methods used by the previous administration can only create more enemies, not more respect.

I think we should try to be as honorable as we pretend to be.

There are many convicted terrorists already being held in American prisons, having been tried in American courts. It happened under the previous administration. Where was your outrage then?

Rudy Giuliani spoke at length after the first WTC bombing about the need to subject those responsible to "American justice." He's only changed his tune now that it's politically expedient to do so. Typical conservative hypocrisy.

Ah they probably had a bad childhood that made them act up. We should give them a break. Are you liberal pansies nuts?????? If they stand trial in court they will have access to FBI and CIA information that could be leaked to their terrorist friends. Would you want them tried in your backyard and risk attacks or violence from retaliation? They are violent terrorists and probably should be put in the general population of a maximum security prison and see how long they last.
