Coburn still plans for lots of reading

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans want to spend weeks debating the health care bill, but they didn't want to spend days next week having the 2,074-page document read aloud, as Sen. Tom Coburn had threatened.
Though Coburn had to drop that plan, the Oklahoma Republican said he still plans to post a section-by-section explanation of the legislation on his Senate Web site. And, should the health care debate last for weeks in the Senate, there could still be opportunities for Coburn or other Republicans to insist on a lot of reading aloud.
Coburn said in an interview last week that he plans to be on the Senate floor fighting to change the Democrats' health insurance reform legislation, though he predicted Democrats will ultimately prevail.
"I think they're going to win," he said.

How about, instead of opposing it, try to make it better for people?
Sounds to me like he is worried about campaign contributions and harming insurance companies, more than the voters he represents.

He won't need to worry about campaign contributions next time around - he'll be voted out, as he should. This guy's a complete waste of taxpayer money and effort.

What's the deal with having bills read aloud? Do we have some senators who can't read?

Wouldn't want them *reading* the bills they vote on and certainly don't want them understanding them.

fld11,
If Coburn runs again he'll be re-elected.

With his position on not fixing health care and providing veterans' benefits, I question if he should have ever been allowed to become a doctor, let alone a senator.

I guess we're in trouble if Sen. Coburn exercises the Senate's own procedural rules.

Coburn will be re-elected as he is truly representative of what Oklahoma stands for--denial of benefits to war veterans, cover-up and support for a fellow prayer meeting senator from Nevada, baffoonary and obstructionism and hypocrisy in large measure.
This type of person is the reason that government doesn't work well--he is a destroyer rather than a builder, a critic instead of an idea man. Put this guy in charge of anything and it will devolve into a morass of confusion, platitudes and blaming the other guy.
All it takes to get elected in Oklahoma--this guy has in large measure.

Oh yes Coburn is such a pariah that he gets re-elected.
He's such a pariah that the state's Democrat Party can't run anyone against him and win the election. Why is that?

The one accurate comment here is that Governor Brad Henry is the only democratic candidate in this entire state with even a snowball's chance in hades of even making it a race.........
I would contribute big money...... if the dems would run monotone speaking, boring Doug Dodd against the Senator.
I'm dying to hear Dodd say one more time, that...... "he's the only candidate with military experience"..............
Come,on Doug.........one more time,......please.
I'll kick in a bundle for you. Talk to your mom, Elaine,....about it.
