Coburn decries checks for drugs

He says the money for Medicare recipients is being borrowed from their grandchildren.

By JIM MYERS World Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — As President Barack Obama and his administration promoted health-care reform, U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn continued to deride it Tuesday, specifically a $250 check for older people for the Medicare drug coverage gap.

The Oklahoma Republican, a staunch opponent of the reform measure that is viewed by others as a huge victory for the president, also said Oklahoma already is experiencing an increase in complaints over the lack of access because physicians are dropping Medicare like a "hot potato."

"The $250 bump for the Medicare Part D will apply to less than 10 percent of the Medicare patients that are out there," Coburn said during a teleconference call with reporters.

He described it as ironic that even that amount of money will have to be borrowed from the recipients' grandchildren.

"I think it is an abomination," Coburn said.

Although not in Congress at the time the prescription drug benefit was passed, the senator said he opposed it because those who are receiving the benefit today never paid for it, and that will leave a $13 trillion unfunded liability for future generations.

"That was a whole problem with Medicare Part D," Coburn said.

He and Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., who, like Coburn, was a physician before he entered politics, accused the Obama administration of misleading Americans about health-care reform.

They focused that charge on Medicare Advantage plans.

Coburn said that despite what the administration tells older people, their benefits will decrease while their costs will increase.

He predicted that companies will not continue to offer Medicare Advantage plans, adding that that was the intent of the administration's approach to health care.

In poor, rural areas, Coburn said, people cannot afford a Medicare supplemental policy, so Medicare Advantage actually helped equalize medical treatment for the poor.

"Delayed care is denied care," he said.

Senator Coburn...Thank you for standing up and telling the senior citizens the truth about Obamacare! To add credence to what Dr. Coburn said...my doctor told me within the last month that he had attended a seminar for physicians and that after polling the doctors, forty-five% of them said they were either going to retire or change to another field. And the administration is thinking (?) of making Puerto Rico a state of the United States. How many more citizens will that add to Obamacare? There are fewer medical graduates going into family practice and with so many of the existing doctors retiring or changing fields...how are the American people going to get timely and adequate care????? As Dr. Coburn said, the doctors are dropping Medicare like a hot potato! Does Obama care?????
Tomorrow's headline: "Coburn decries oxygen because Obama breathes it."
TulsaBorn...I hope you never have to draw on any accomplishment of Sen.Coburn!!
I am sure Dr. Coburn would not walk away from you if you were in dire need of medical attention. I wonder if he would ask you first if you have ever said anything derogatory about him...NO, he would carry out his duty to do everything for you he could. Shame on you!!!

Dr. NO is at it again...it would be refreshing if just once, he was part of the solution to something....anything.
It would be nice if Coburn could provide a list of doctors who are refusing to take medicare patients. The 'doctors' that say they will retire or go into a different field probably should not be doctors in the first place. They are in it MORE for the money that for the care of patients, much like Coburn himself. Perhaps we need legislation that doctors must accept a certain percent of medicare patients. They may not be able to have three mortgages on their house anymore. They may have to drive different cars. If they refuse to treat a patient with medicare, they are in violation of their oath.
I think Medicare part D was signed into law by Bush, dunno if you can blame the Obama for this legislation. Coburn does have a point, how could any American overlook the fact that these benefits aren't paid for by anyone.
Of course they are. They are paid for the same way roads are paid for.

"Delayed care is denied care"...so following Coburn's own words, doctors dropping medicare patiends are denying care.

slatz - you're right Dr. NO is at it again. No better solutions just No No NO!
Bright_Star...Doctors can opt out of medicare! At the New York-Presbyterian Hospital there are ninety-three internist and of the ninety-three only thirty-seven accept medicare. The remainder of the internist has chosen to opt out of medicare. I know you will not believe me...google it. Also, Doctors would be well qualified to be a pharmaceutical rep and probably make as much if not more than a doctor. And no outrageous malpractice insurance...no overhead...shorter working days...lots of perks for the doctors to enjoy.
As I said before..Tom(no to anything) Corburn...has Blank Checked..two wars and Halliburton..for years..not once did he think about childrens future!!

Yes, let's force doctors to accept medicare patients. Then they can watch even more patients die because Medicare refuses to authorize treatments. If a doctor orders a medically needed treatment, but Medicare says it not needed, you don't get the treatment. Have any of you had to try and appeal a MediCare decision? Medicare is mostly run by bureaucrats, not doctors.

coburn is right. enforce paygo and stop borrowing money to fund socialism.
iolana57 got it right. Doctors have been bouncing me all over town since they are now taking a position against Obamacare. Thanks again to his Holiness Barry. But notice Tom the Terminator Coburn has lost it and who would blame him considering what he is up against. He keeps referring to Medicare D as an unfunded entitlement just as he does other programs we have paid in to for years. The programs were called insurance but they were run like Madoff schemes with no regulation except self regulation. If they didn't increase premiums to match the losses and they were a private insurance company then the state regulators would have stepped in. So what did the feds do? They raided the cookie jar and used it wherever they wanted and then declared it is insolvent due to a box of IOU's that will never be paid. And whose fault is that? I have written Terminator Tom repeatedly since I am a retired Insurance Claims Manager and he is clueless. He thinks undercover stings at the price of 190 million are the answer. Rediculous. Turn it over to the private sector and get the DC quacks out of it instead of hiring an Army of thousands to run the new OBAMACARE flop.

Some physicians/hospitals don't accept Medicare, some don't accept Medicaid, some don't accept private plans ... "Obamacare" has little to nothing to do with that. The insurance industry has carefully "mapped" the demographics of Oklahoma to ensure that each of the major private insurers gets a "slice of the pie". "Obamacare" has little to nothing to do with that.

Medicare Part D was a horrid joke played upon America's seniors ... the government created the "donut hole" to ensure that all seniors would be REQUIRED to purchase SUPPLEMENTAL private insurance (in addition to the increased premiums for Part D coverage), then, "made a deal with the devil" by agreeing NOT to negotiate pharmaceutical prices!

As I understand it, the Medicare Part D premium is an additional $30 monthly? So, where does No-burn get the notion that the recipients of the $250 rebate "didn't pay for it"?

It is absolutely shameful that our seniors are not better cared for! But, it most certainly is not Obama's fault! As I recall, it was GWB and his Republican Congress that passed Medicare Part D ... one of those "smoke and mirrors" moments!

As for Medicare Advantage ... it appears that "Advantage" has been taking advantage of our seniors ... offering "low cost" health care plans to our seniors. The problem being that the health care "covered" is not necessarily what is predominantly needed by our aging population AND the plans are government-subsidized (taxpayer funded). I agree wholeheartedly that physicians should be required to accept/treat Medicare patients ... our seniors put many of these doctors through medical school via taxpayer-funded student loans. Frankly, they should not be permitted to reject ANY insurer's health care coverage. The only difference between competing insurers is the amount of the stipend paid to the physician for "accepting" the insureds.
Bright_Star says the doctors are in for the money. Yeah, it is money...but, it is the money that is going out of their pockets. They go to college four years, medical school three years and internship three years to be a doctor.
The malpractice insurance is extremely high. Dr. Paul Tudder (OB-GYN) pays $84,000 per year...started at $23,000 a year and has soared to $84,000 as of this year. Then he has equipment (which Obama administration is going to tax) to buy, overhead, payroll...lots of extra expenses. Plus medicare payments to the doctors are going to be cut by 21%. I don't know very many people (I know I wouldn't) that is willing to take in a payment from medicare that doesn't even cover the doctors expenses...not very cost effective. Wouldn't you say?
TeaTimer (last year)
If these folks that are eligible for this $250 would pay the extra for complete coverage they wouldn't need this. My husband and I pay pay big bucks for coverage and who is helping us with it. If you don't
buy it why should we (who do)pay for yours also. It is our tax dollars misdirected, again.
TeaTimer (last year)
Since I had never selected an internist(general practice doctor) I called one for an appointment. It took several calls back and forth to decide they would see me. The reason they finally took me was mostly because they knew my daughter, a fellow physician . They said this doctor was not adding more Medicare patients.
The man's beginning to sound like a broken record. I'm still trying to figure out what he's done in a term + in the Senate. Is he for anthing except expecting everyone to be worried about his grandkids' legacy?
BI.Collar...I guess I didn't phrase my sentence correctly...I was pointing out the time spent in getting their education. Thanks for the info!
YAY!!! We're funding socialism!!!! (And have been for 75 years.)
To Miwells...Hey, the "great one" through his Obamacare has transferred 500M
from Medicare to be used otherwise! And, the Obamacare has cut 21% from the medicare payments going to the doctor. Is Bush to blame for this also?
