The Tulsa County Recycled Medication Program will receive top honors at the Champions of Health Awards, which will be presented in November.

Twenty-seven retired volunteer physicians, along with Tulsa County Social Services, the Tulsa County Medical Society and the Tulsa County Pharmacy, work to legally reclaim unused prescription drugs from long-term care facilities and donate them to charity clinics.

In five years, more than $5.5 million in medicines has been redistributed. The program has been replicated in whole or in part in 37 other states.

The Champion of Senior Health honor will go to Dr. James Pletcher. The chief of staff for Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, he travels throughout northeastern Oklahoma to treat rural residents with mental illnesses.

Crossings Community Clinic in Oklahoma City also will be honored.

The awards banquet is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center.

"Congratulations to this year's winners and to all who participated in the Champions of Health Awards," said Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis, who will be the keynote speaker.

Reservations are available for $30 and may be made through Nov. 6 by calling (866) 876-4376.

Event sponsorships benefit the Oklahoma Caring Foundation, which provides free childhood immunizations and basic access to health care for Oklahoma children.

The awards are presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oklahoma,
the Oklahoma Hospital Association, the Oklahoma Osteopathic Association, the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, the Oklahoma State Department of Health and the Oklahoma State Medical Association.
