A birth date is now required to purchase some common cold medicines from Oklahoma pharmacies.

The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics launched new initiatives Nov. 1 to try to curb the illicit use of pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient for manufacturing methamphetamine.

A birth date is now required, in addition to a full name and a state-issued identification number.

The added security measure should help eliminate sales to individuals using fake or multiple identification cards to purchase more pseudoephedrine than state law allows, said OBN spokesman Mark Woodward said in a release.

“OBN has also been working with the Department of Public Safety to implement a data-sharing program, allowing the Pseudoephedrine Tracking Program to reject sales from customers using identification cards not currently in the state system,” Woodward said.

In 2006, Oklahoma was the first state to begin tracking pseudoephedrine sales electronically in real time, according to the release. This fall, a new feature will allow all Oklahoma law enforcement officers to be able to access the system.
