Vaccine in demand
Free walk-in clinic for swine flu shots draws huge crowd

Hundreds of people wait in line outside the Exchange Center at Expo Square in Tulsa on Saturday for H1N1 flu vaccine shots during a free walk-in clinic. JAMES GIBBARD / Tulsa World

Long lines and big crowds are familiar sights at the Tulsa fairgrounds.

Just about every weekend, one event or another brings large crowds to Expo Square to gather in the shadow of the Golden Driller.

However, those who converged at the Exchange Center on Saturday morning were more concerned with staying healthy than having fun.

Tulsa City-County Health Department spokeswoman Melanie Christian said 2,381 vaccinations were provided during the department's H1N1 vaccination clinic.

She said the line of people was long when the doors opened at 9 a.m., but it shortened considerably as the morning went along.

Those eligible to receive shots on Saturday were children ages 6 months to 18 years; pregnant women; "frontline" health-care workers; parents of infants younger than 6 months; and adults ages 19 to 64 with chronic medical conditions.

Similar free clinics were held Saturday throughout the state.

Jeane Henderson, 62, wore a surgical mask Saturday just to be on the safe side. She said that she just had oral surgery and saw no need to take any chances.

Henderson said she has had a couple of heart attacks, and her doctor recommended that she get a swine flu shot.

She said she thinks it's important for everyone to get one of the shots when possible.

"I hope that everybody does it," Henderson said.

Many of the adults at the clinic on Saturday could remember the swine flu scare of the 1970s, which turned out to be
more hype than substance.

However, more than 30 years later, this situation is proving more serious.

In late October, President Barack Obama declared the swine flu outbreak a national emergency. Health authorities say more than 1,000 people in the U.S. have died from the strain of flu known as H1N1, and virtually every state has widespread flu activity.

On Thursday, health officials reported that three Oklahomans died of complications from the H1N1 virus in the prior week, which brought Oklahoma's death toll to 21 when a Kay County man who died before the state began keeping track of swine flu deaths was included.

John Wolfkill, 34, of Tulsa, his wife, Julie, and their two young sons have now been inoculated

For Julie, it was a somewhat unconventional way to begin her 35th birthday.

"There's no reason not to," John Wolfkill said.

As healthy adults, the couple were able to get immunized through the nasal mist method.

"No pain at all," John Wolfkill said. "Actually, the smell is sweet."

Mark Webster, 38, of Sand Springs brought his 3-year-old daughter, Sydney, to be immunized. He said he thought it especially important since his family will soon embark on a European vacation, a trip that will include a lot of time in airports.

Others got a shot for less enjoyable reasons.

Shayne Barron, 45, of Tulsa said he is a lifelong asthmatic and will soon be undergoing surgery that will involve his respiratory system.

He said he was pleased with how fast he got his shot on Saturday.

"They herded us through like cattle," said Barron, adding he meant that in a good way.

Well, it is the fairgrounds.

Additional upcoming walk-in clinics:

Thursday from 3–7 p.m. at The Church at BattleCreek at 3025 N. Aspen Ave. in Broken Arrow

Dec. 3 from 3–7 p.m. at Tulsa Community College West campus at 7505 W. 41st St. in Tulsa

Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon at Oral Roberts University at 7777 S. Lewis Ave. in Tulsa

Isn't it nice to know, the people on Wall Street got their vaccinations, so have prisoners.
Yet--John Q Public, and all of our children are still waiting.
That--should be a outrage. Where is the TEA party for this??

I swear, put the word "free" on anything and people in droves will line up for it.

I'm passing on the swine flu shot for the time being. I don't even do the regular flu shot. I use to get a flu shot every fall 1995-1998. Each year I would be sick with the flu 2 to 3 times any where between January and March. I'd be really sick, miss a week or more of work each year. I decided those shots were killing me. Since 1999 I've only been sick with the flu maybe 4 times and very short in duration.

A very well organized event. The line was long. Snaking around the exposition building and extending into the parking lot. It my son and I about 35 minutes to reach the expo building entrance. Once inside, a curtoutus course was laid out, back and forth for four levels. At the end a row of triage table was laid out from A-k, with two triage nurses at each table. Once the nurse had gathered your paperwork and asked your preference for either the "live virus vaccine" or the "inactive vaccine" you proceeded down the row, which was 4 deep to an empty station to receive your vaccine. The whole process took about 50 min. From parking lot to vaccine. Very well organized indeed. My son and I decided on the "live virus" as it takes effect immediately. I feel fine except for a little light headedness.

My suspicions concerning the vaccine shortage were confirmed today. Speaking with one of the nurses, he indicated there was no danger of running out of the vaccines today. Both the live and inactive versions. There is plenty of the vaccine for anyone that wants to get it.

The problem is a shortage for the vaccine clinics in the public, doctors offices super markets and pharmacies. These sites are pay sites. With the prices ranging from $30-$40 dollars for the"live version to $20-$30 dollars for the inactive version. Dr. Offices, visiting nurse organizations, pharmacies, supermarkets, work places, malls etc, places where people pay, are experiences shortages.

The health department clinic are free. The nurse told me that any excess vaccines they have would be distributed to for payment organizations. And my response to him was something to the effect of , "go door to door, churches, schools, parks or anywhere else to get rid of all you have". And he said, "we're trying, it's our goal to just run out". So really the shortage really lies with the "for payment" distribution network. I really hope they are successful in getting all the vaccine to the public for free.

The live is for children under 5. But since they have so much of the stuff, they dosed it up for adults as well. They gave us a choice with one stipulation, You had to have been completely healthy for the last two months.

And yes, most people wanted the "live vaccine" as it takes effect immediately. With full immunity within 72 hours. The "inactive" version takes 10-14 days to start to develop immunity. I saw very few needles. Unfortunately the few needles I did see were going to children. I said to my son, it's funny the parents are getting the "live vaccine" and giving the needle to there kids. But I'm sure it had to do with health. Many disabled children were there to day.

And yes the doctors offices, visiting nurses, supermarkets, pharmacies, places where you have to pay, are having a shortage. Everyone seems to be taking advantage of the health departments free vaccines.

Also. they give you a card with the vaccines manufactures name, vaccine lot mumber and a 24 hour number to the CDC to call if you experience any problems as a result of the vaccine. They are prepared if anything goes wrong.

I got me a runner chain for my son tonight. Since he got the "live version", I'm gonna put him out on the chain tonight just incase he turns after the sun goes down. I told him My dog and I can't take a chance he might turn into a zombie in the middle of the night.

I'll be back, it's starting to get dark. I gotta get my chain ready.

I'm sorry psychedelikrelik, I just couldn't take that chance. So far, besides the cussing, he seems to be alright on the runner chain. I'll check him again in the morning.

Well I did. My son reported to me he didn't. So that is a good thing. But I felt lightheaded after the nasal ingestion. And for a couple of hours afterwards, I didn't feel right in terms of my stomach and the taste in my mouth. Food and drink didn't help. It wasn't anything I can put my finger on but, I just didn't feel right. What ever that may mean. But I feel fine now.

Rimshot, because for the public safety as many people as possible should have the opportunity to receive this vaccine.

Why do you ask? Do you feel if some can't afford to pay they should, through hard luck and tragedy, end in the TW for you to comment upon? Come on man it's about humnanity and compassion. H1N1 is not about politics unless that's the extent of your level of compassion.

That IS the intent, Mar. We WANT as many folks as possible to get vaccinated and hopefully mitigate the impact of H1N1.

Hence, the large, public clinics.

Future, I wasn't sure by your post if you meant the shortage is or is not at the doctors offices? I'm surprised they give you a choice of live or killed vaccine. I thought the shots were all killed vaccine and the nasal spray live for children.

We knew this thing was likely to mutate for the last 10 years but those folks were chasing wmd and did not have time to think about ways to better prep. for what was sure to come. They even refused to beef up vaccine production facilities that should have been in place years ago waiting for this day. Instead we had to ramp up after April and lost precious time because we were waiting for free enterprise to take care of the problem.

People over the age of 65 did not get the vaccine, due to the fact that they have immunity to the disease acquired from their environment and vaccinations before 1944.

Futureworld - I too went there close to 11:00AM
I had previously posted I thought it would be a cattle call. I was wrong!
The Tulsa Health department and the support workers and volunteers did an incredible job. The inoculation clinic at expo was an exercse in good planning. Very friendly, courteous, professional people who were well trained and organized made this a very successful clinic. I was in and out in less than ten minutes.

The Health Department gets a big thumbs up! They did a great job! Thanks to everyone who made it so successful.
