WASHINGTON – President Obama said Wednesday he has appointed University of Oklahoma President David Boren as a co-chairman of an intelligence advisory board.

Boren endorsed Obama during last year's presidential race and served as an adviser to the president's campaign on national security and foreign policy.

At that time, he cited Obama's "good judgment'' in warning against the Iraq war, and Boren advised the then-presidential hopeful on the importance of building partnerships and sharing burdens with other countries.

Boren said President George W. Bush's administration had depended too much on the military in foreign affairs, describing that approach as a huge mistake.

In a statement, Boren said he was honored by the appointment, adding he was pleased former Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., also will serve as a co-chairman.

"It is my hope that together, with the other members of the board, we can give candid, thoughtful, and nonpartisan advice, which will be helpful to the country,'' he said.

"This part time advisory role, which is uncompensated, will in no way alter my plans to remain as president of the University of Oklahoma. I see this appointment as a chance to perform my duty as a citizen to serve our country.''

According to the White House, the President's Intelligence Advisory Board for 50 years has acted as a nonpartisan body, offering presidents objective and expert advice on the conduct of U.S. intelligence.

Boren served as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee during his time in the U.S. Senate.

His son, U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Okla., currently serves on the House Intelligence Committee.
