Retired Pocola teacher dies while trying to kill armadillo
By Associated Press

POCOLA — Authorities in Le Flore County say a retired Pocola High School teacher was killed when he accidentally shot himself while trying to kill an armadillo.
Sheriff Bruce Curnutt says 59-year-old Carl Joe Griner died Saturday in the shooting outside his home.
Curnutt says Griner told a friend he was going to kill an armadillo that had been damaging his garden. The friend said she heard a gunshot and when she went outside to check on Griner she found him on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Curnutt says it appears Griner tripped over a garden hose and as he fell the weapon fired.

sad to hear about an accident like this.
interesting way of wording, to say that "as he fell the weapon fired"...as if the weapon itself made the choice.

One must ask why he was doing this. I'm glad he didn't live near me. What a goose.

Have you ever had armadillos in your yard? They can dig holes deep enough that you could break your ankle if you stepped in one. They are very destructive.
I imagine he lived in the country. I have shot many armadillo, possums, skunks in my yard. So does my neighbor.

This is sad, sorry for the loss. Are they sure the armadillo didn't do it?

lucky girl,
I shot an armadillo once, it was laying on it's back and I thought it was dead as I approached. That armadillo was able to jump two feet straight up from in a back position. I took off running, it scared the 5@#% out of me.

I want to go home with the armadillo. Pick country music from Amarillo to Abilene. Friendliest people and the prettiest women you've ever seen.
Sorry, just could not help myself. Sad situation.

God have mercy on Mr. Griner, prayers and condolences to his family and friends.
That being said, I hate armadillos to the point I'll drive to the other side of the road to run one over. They're nothing but Texas possums. When I lived in Bixby, they kept my front yard torn up.
I finally got smart and got rid of the grubworms underground, so in turn the armadillos moved on down the road. When armadillos started migrating north from Texas, it was a sad time for Oklahoma.

Ric - Wanna borrow my .458? With a hollow point there should only be a red mist left - perhaps a few small chunks.
