Kern draws transgender rival
CANDIDATES
Sally Kern (left) and Brittany Novotny:
Kern, a Republican, likely will face Novotny, a Democrat, in the campaign for Oklahoma City's House District 84 seat in this fall's general election.
But both say the campaign will be about policy, not gender identity.

OKLAHOMA CITY — A controversiallawmaker known for her comments against homosexuality likely will face the state's first known openly transgender candidate in this fall's general election.
Oklahoma City attorney Brittany Novotny, a Democrat, filed Tuesday to run for the seat held by Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City.
Novotny, 30, said the campaign is not about her gender identity.
"For six years, we've had someone who has not represented her district, has been ineffective on problems, and is bad for business," she said.
Novotny said Kern is pushing her personal agenda instead of focusing on issues that are important to House District 84, and because of that, the state and Kern's Oklahoma City district have suffered.
"She focuses on things that aren't critical issues to the district, like education," Novotny said, adding that that leaves many constituents feeling disconnected.
In 2008, Kern made national headlines when she said that homosexuality is a greater threat to the United States than terrorism.
In a 2009 ceremony at the state Capitol, she sponsored a signing of a morality proclamation that declared that the country's economic decline was a result of a decline in moral values.
Kern, 63, said she does not plan to mention Novotny's gender identity in the campaign.
"There is so much we disagree on policywise that that is enough for us to debate on," she said.
Novotny said she wants people to understand that she is a heterosexual female who was raised as a male. She legally and surgically transitioned into a female three years ago.
Kern said Novotny's attacks on her about not paying enough attention to education are campaign rhetoric.
"I sit on the education committee, and I have helped pass many bills that have helped schools," she said.
"She is just an outsider looking in."
Novotny said she sent a letter to Kern last month asking her to debate policy and campaign issues.
Kern said she would be willing to debate Novotny only once — during an annual community forum in northwest Oklahoma City this fall.
"I feel that is a neutral place to talk about the issues and that we can have many people come hear about topics they want us to talk about," she said.
Kern said the top issues in the campaign will be keeping taxes low while bringing more jobs to the state.

Go Brittany! Wish I could vote for her. Sally Kern is nuts and an embarrassment for our state. I wish she'd go back to Idaho where she came from.

Sitting on a committee does not mean you value education. Just look at Sullivan and his environmental posts. One could argue that Sally Kern is a terrorist herself using fear to manipulate people and political offices. Too bad it is not a DA making that argument.

That just might be a good debate to watch, and yes I would call it a cat-fight.

I think they are using the word 'gender' interchangeably with 'sexual' in order to not offend people with the word 'sexual' - meaning that there may have been surgical reconstruction of certain organs and tissues. I really don't know if it is just a man in a dress being more feminine(transgender).

Transgender is basically feeling like you are the opposite sex than you are. A male stuck in a womans body or a woman stuck in a mans body. Its not homosexuality, nor is it just cross dressing. Its a deep felt belief that your body is just wrong.
There have been some scientific evidence pointing to different chemical make ups of the 2 sexes brains. Most people who are transgendered seem to have the make up of the opposite sex.

I'll also add most transgendered people are generally very effiminate looking men, or larger stockier women too, so its almost as if their body recognizes the 'wrongness' of the way they were born & tries to make up for ir.

So Rimshot...you like all the money coming into Oklahoma from GLT activists groups. Sounds like a way to boost Oklahoma tourism.

Me, too Raven. I'm confused. There's transgender, transexual, homosexual, hetreosexual. It confuses me. I can keep the last two straight (no pun intended). But the first two confuse me. Does transgender mean she used to be a man and is now a woman or is a woman but wishes she were a man?
Oh, yeah. THere is also transvestite. I think that just has to do with what you wear, though.

OK, I see explanations have come in while I was writing my post. So is there a difference between a transgenered man and a homosexual man? They both like men, right? But, the transgendered man would rather be a woman liking a man while the homosexual is happy to be a man liking a man?

I thought that 'transgender' means that you changed your gender. Maybe they can do it at will, walk in one door a man, and come out the other a woman, like shape-shifting. That would be cool.

dannysgirl,
Transgender has nothing to do with sexuality. The man dresses as a woman. It doesn't necessarily mean he wants to be with a man. I recently listened to a woman (which was a man dressed as a woman) give a talk about it. She stilled preferred to be with women.

In other words, transgender deals with who you want to be... not who you want to sleep with.

I'm just glad I'm a woman who likes men....no two ways about it. So much less confusing. They have so much more to offer if you know what I mean. (I borrowed that line from Blanch Devereaux on GOLDEN GIRLS).

But, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with people who are not like me, so don't anybody start yelling at me.

Oh brother...
I will never understand why a person would want to change their gender. If you were born into this world as a man you should be a man. People who say they are a woman stuck in a mans body are full of it. You are making a CHOICE to change your gender, plain and simple. Saying that, good luck with the election "Brittany".

Why is this such big news? Who cares, I think the bigger question is why anybody would want to be a politician.
