DUNCAN — An inmate who had been under suicide watch was found dead in his cell at the Stephens County Detention Center.

The medical examiner's office says 33-year-old Terry Manuel Jr. of Walters was found hanging from bed linens inside his jail cell about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation says a jailer had checked on Manuel less than an hour before he was found.

Manuel had been held until Tuesday at the Comanche County jail in Lawton where officials say he was under suicide watch. Manuel was moved Tuesday night to the jail in Duncan, where he was found dead just hours later.

I always thought that when a person was on suicide watch, that any object that could be used to carry out the act would be removed from where the person was being held.
It is apparent that this inmate was transfered to a facility were the staff weren't trained properly to deal with suicidal people or they just didn't care. I hope it wasn't the latter.

Isn't this the same guy that escaped from prison while taking out the trash. Then he went to his "estranged" wife's house and found her with her boyfriend, fought the dude, and then stole her white blazer. I think it is. He was in for lewd acts, drugs, and possession of a sawed of shotgun I believe. Evidently he wasn't a very happy person.

He must have finally finished "taking out the trash."

Well, sheet! I guess he was obviously serious about ending it. What the sheet happened to the person who was on watch duty?

Good point Few, if he was on Suicide Watch, does that mean they just watched him do it?

yessir hick. Is that our first state tax cut for the year? You can go to the offender search on the Oklahoma Department of Corrections website to get a look at him.

ARBYTHREE, I think so as far as watching him die.
It's kind of like someone on death row who dies of old age.

Not a very good suicide watch program! So does this mean the jail is liable for his suicide?

uh they are not even suppose to have sheets in the room when they are on suicide watch. i know someone who was on suicide watch and they would not give him any sheets and he was in a window area right next to a desk where guards were suppose to be watching him.

you know I would hope that none of you ever have a loved one who messes up and ends up in jail. your comments and judgments about someone being better off dead just might change.

cgil, so right you are. There is no compassion for people who have mental problems. A lot have minor offenses that are overblown. An attorney friend told me a lot do things without thinking things out when under the influence of alcohol or drugs and their actions are blown out of proportion.

says he HAD been on suicide watch at the previous jail, not where he was at the time it happened.
