State House committee approves anti-abortion bill
By The Associated Press

Last Modified: 2/17/2009 7:38 PM
OKLAHOMA CITY — A state House committee Tuesday approved legislation that would prohibit physicians from performing abortions solely on account of the gender of a woman's fetus, even though the measure's author said there is no evidence the practice has ever occurred in the state.
The legislation, passed 20-2 by the House Public Health Committee, also creates the Statistical Reporting of Abortion Act, which requires physicians who perform abortions to report certain information to the state Department of Health.
The measure is the last in a long list of anti-abortion bills that have been considered by the Oklahoma Legislature in recent years that restrict a woman's legal right to terminate a pregnancy that was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973.
Last year, lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to override Gov. Brad Henry's veto of legislation requiring doctors to perform an ultrasound on a woman planning an abortion. Henry said at the time it was "unconscionable" to require victims of rape and incest to undergo the ultrasound procedure.
The author of the latest bill, Rep. Dan Sullivan, R-Tulsa, said it is designed to stop couples from using the gender of a fetus as a reason to get an abortion. Sullivan said a doctor would be prohibited from performing an abortion if the mother specifically said the fetus' sex was the reason.
"As designer babies become more prevalent, we must do all we can to ensure unborn children are not killed simply because a dad always dreamed of having a son," Sullivan said.
However, he said there is no evidence the practice has occurred in Oklahoma.
"I haven't received any definite information that proves it," Sullivan said.
He said the reporting requirement will give Oklahomans detailed information about abortions that are performed in the state each year. It would not require the reporting of an ectopic pregnancy or the removal of a dead fetus that was the result of a spontaneous miscarriage, accidental trauma or a criminal assault on the mother.
Under the bill, the Health Department would make state statutes and regulations related to abortion and the reporting forms available on its Web site. Physicians will also be notified about the requirements to report abortion-related information.
Finally, the measure directs the Health Department to publish annual abortion reports on its Web site and to ensure compliance with the provisions of the act by conducting periodic inspections of places where abortions are performed.
The bill now goes to the full House for consideration.

I must say I support a womans right to make her own decision, but in todays society I do approve this bill if it's written the way this article says.

What? We need a bill for this?
"However, he said there is no evidence the practice has occurred in Oklahoma."
So, we need time and money spent to pass a law on something that there is no evidence of occuring?
"He said the reporting requirement will give Oklahomans detailed information about abortions that are performed in the state each year."
Now I see what is going on. They want information on women who are getting abortions.
"Under the bill, the Health Department would make state statutes and regulations related to abortion and the reporting forms available on its Web site. Physicians will also be notified about the requirements to report abortion-related information."
This doesn't even sound legal. How can they get by with this and not be required to report other types of medical procedures such as tubal ligations or vastectomies. Heck, anything. They can't do this.
Republicans are STUPID. Ten commandment monument, Intelligent Design, English only, and now this bill to report health information related to abortions. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN BOYS!

Took the words right out of my mouth. I guess we also better get started on the "No Kangaroo Fights" bill. That might happen too...someday.

AYO!!! You took the words right out of my keyboard.
I think it is time for our Oklahoma lawmakers to resign and get real jobs because it seems they have nothing important to do.

Since abortion is legal, why shouldn't a woman be able to abort a fetus because it is a boy or a girl? Who cares what the reason is, isn't it the choice that counts?

Let's all see if we can't come up with laws to imaginary problems. Mine will outlaw the sell of nuclear weapons within the borders of the state. I mean you already can't sell them be federal law, but we as a state should really look into it. Also the bill will outlaw the use of puppy fur in pillow casing to prevent allergies. It will be called the nuclear-puppy fur act of 1904.

Could somebody please translate what Keep the Change is trying to say? "6 year low in the down"? What does that mean? And what does it have to do with this particular bill? I swear, since TW started the point system for comments, the online dialogue has tanked lower than the economy. I don't visit comments often anymore but I'm dismayed when I do. KTC is a good example why.

How stupid and irritating is it that our lawmakers are wasting time, and MONEY, on issues that do not exist! Dan Sullivan is my state rep and I WILL contact his office about this nonsense!

Oh Lawrence you aren't that lame are you? No one is having abortions based on the gender.
This bill is a farce to deter and to obtain medical information on women who get abortions.
Somebody, get this lunatic representative out of office.

I'm baffled. Preventative anti-abortion? Is that what you would call this? Where do they get these people?

Amazing our state is facing a six hundred million dollar shortfall and we have our legislators voting on a bill like this when there is no evidence Oklahoma women are asking for abortions due to the sex of the fetus? Could this be big brother at it again and this time controlling another right we as women have...Honestly, the time and money they are going to spend going over this one could be well spent on how to create OK citizens jobs and stop the foreclosure of so many homes as well as save my ssons life which they have no problem ruining (visit rickyslife(.)com please call John Auffet and Gus Blackwell tell them you want HB 1355 passed so Ricky can be a normal teen again and a productive OK citizen Thanks Rickys mom Mary a_political_prisoner with yahoo mail
