OWASSO — A woman died of apparent smoke inhalation in a small house fire Friday, the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The body of Elise Garrett, 48, was found in a bedroom where a mattress was smoldering at her home in the 10300 block of North 129th East Avenue, Capt. Bill Bass said.

Firefighters were notified of the fire about 4:20 p.m., he said.

“The problem with that is, especially with a mattress, the smoke fills the house up, and there are all kinds of toxic things inside that smoke,” Bass said.

Authorities said the fire apparently was accidental but the state Fire Marshal’s Office will make the official determination.

A man who lives at the house found it filled with smoke when he came home from work, Bass said. Elise Garrett, who Bass said could have been sleeping, was the only person in the home at the time of the fire.

Authorities said evidence of cigarette smoking was found.

This is so tragic....I live very close to this family....I called my husband on my way home from work to check on or home because I could see the flames...Brothers and sisters...please, be thankful for the life you have been given and do not take one moment for granted....

Lord, as we mourn the sudden death of Elise, show us the immense power of Your goodness and strengthen our belief that she has entered into Your Presence. Amen.
