MADILL — Marshall County prosecutors have charged an elderly man with first-degree manslaughter after a warning shot he fired to scare off some partygoers killed a Ravia resident.

Brandan Kregar, 23, was hit by a bullet that went through the driver's side door of a pickup truck, into his left leg and then into his right leg, Sheriff R.V. Wilder said. The truck was parked about four miles north of Madill, where Kregar was pronounced dead about 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

Billy Willis, 74, was arrested and taken the county jail, where he was released Saturday afternoon after posting $20,000 bond. The district attorney's office said he was charged on Monday.

Willis is accused of shooting Kregar with a .30-caliber rifle, Wilder said.

"He said he was just wanting to scare the people off his property," said Wilder, adding that Willis complained about a party that was going on near his home that night.

"There had been some reported partying going on, apparently a lot of noise was being made near his property," said Wilder. "He indicated that's what had kept them up all night and people were riding on his lawn with four-wheelers and stuff."

Just before he was shot, Kregar was trying to help round up horses that had escaped and were roaming near Willis' property, officials said.

If convicted, Willis could face a sentence that carries from four years to life imprisonment.

All I can say is thoughts and prayers to both of the families involved.
