One dead, several in critical condition after Greer County car wreck

Three overnight crashes on Oklahoma roadways left one dead and several in critical condition, according to reports from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

A fatality crash occurred at 7:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. 283 just east of Mangum in Greer County. The 2001 Ford pickup was traveling eastbound on the highway, left the road then the driver, 58-year-old Jose Acuna, over corrected causing the vehicle to overturn once, according to reports.

Passenger Paula Mendoza, 63, was ejected from the back passenger window and was then crushed by the vehicle while it was overturning. Paula Mendoza was pronounced dead on the scene due to head injuries and was transported to Greer Funeral Home.

Lisa Lopez, 21, was also ejected from the rear passenger window and was transported to Jackson County Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition with arm injuries.

The driver, Jose Acuna, and passenger Naomi Acuna, 57, are in critical condition. Jose Acuna was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas with head injuries, and Naomi Acuna was taken to Jackson County Memorial Hospital with injuries to her head, trunk, arms and legs as well as internal injuries.

A fourth passenger, 66-year-old Domingo Mendoza, was treated and released from Mangum Hospital.

All five have Texas addresses.

At almost midnight Friday, a 2007 Chevy pickup swerved off the road before the driver over corrected then hit a fence causing the vehicle to overturn several times, according to the OHP report. The crash happened on Oklahoma 46 just south of Gage in Ellis

County.

Passengers John Mann, 20, and Nathan Drake, 19, were ejected 69 feet from the vehicle and Melinda Diehl, 18, was ejected 21 feet.

Mann and Diehl are in critical condition and were transported to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with head injuries.

Drake and the driver, Skyler Thimling, 20, are in stable condition at the Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck.

A fourth passenger, 18-year-old Matthew Nix, was treated and released from Newman Memorial Hospital.

Another one-car crash happened at 2:30 a.m. Saturday three miles south of Stillwater, according to reports.

David Nelson, 21 from Oklahoma City, was driving a 1988 Ford eastbound on 44th Street when he lost control, hit an embankment and then a tree before rolling the vehicle one and half times.

Nelson was pinned for 15 minutes before being rescued by Stillwater Fire and Rescue. He was admitted to Stillwater Medical Center before being transferred to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, and is in critical condition with head and body injuries.

Passengers Matthew Talmage, 21 from Stillwater, and Warren Presnell, 22 from Guthrie, were treated and released from Stillwater Medical Center.

Why don't people wear seat-belts? A coffin in a grave is much more confining than a belt that holds you in your car seat.
