STRANG — A 21-year-old Mayes County woman has died after the pickup in which she was riding went out of control as its driver swerved to avoid a deer.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the accident that killed Meghan Hitchcock of Spavinaw happened on a county road northeast of Strang about 3:08 a.m. Saturday.

Troopers say the driver, 23-year-old Jason Hitchcock of Spavinaw, swerved after seeing the deer and lost control of the pickup.

The vehicle then went off the road, and after the driver overcorrected, went across the road and hit a tree and began to overturn. While it was airborne, the pickup hit another tree and came to rest on its wheels.

Meghan Hitchcock died at the scene. Jason Hitchcock was taken by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital, where he was treated and released.
