Rural Oklahoma resident urges others to watch for tax charges

HOLDENVILLE — Hughes County resident Sue McLoud has a tax warning for rural Oklahoma residents: Living outside the city limits won’t necessarily exempt you from paying city sales and use taxes.

McLoud said she and a friend were both charged city sales tax on their telephone bills. She’s also been told she owes other city taxes, and it could be happening to other unsuspecting rural Oklahomans.

Oklahoma Tax Commission and AT&T spokesmen say they don’t know how many people are affected, but they haven’t received many complaints.

McLoud’s problem apparently stems from her residence having the same five-digit ZIP code as Holdenville residents, even though McLoud lives about four miles southwest of the Holdenville city limit.

McLoud asked a woman who lives east of Holdenville to check her telephone bill, and the woman discovered she also is being charged the city’s 5 percent sales tax.

Any suggestions on how to contact the appropriate department at the OTC to file a complaint? We are also being charged by AT&T for cell and landline as well as our dish internet service.

Thanks,
Lakedweller

Sorry, Ms. Mcloud, just because you live out in the country doesn't mean you get to avoid taxes.

I looked at my AT&T bill and all I see is a county tax. It doesn't say what county and since I live in Okmulgee county but my zip is for a Creek county town makes me wonder.
