A Manchester man drowned Saturday night in a private lake in Alfalfa County after attempting to swim from one shore to the other, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Johnnie Leon Hess, 55, was part of a large group of people who were at the lake near Byron for a party.

Around 8 p.m. Saturday, Hess, while attempting to swim across the lake, went under and never resurfaced, according to a highway patrol report.

The lake patrol started dragging the lake at 8 a.m. Sunday and Hess’ body was recovered around 9:45 a.m.
