Youth testifies that former Big Brother abused him for years
John Gisler

A teenager testified Wednesday that a former Tulsa teacher he knew through a mentoring program engaged in multiple types of sexual conduct with him over a period of years.
At a preliminary hearing, a 17-year-old boy said John Gisler of Tulsa was his “Big Brother” from June 26, 2005, until March 1, 2009.
The boy said he and Gisler would hang out together, play baseball at a park, play games and watch movies.
He said he went to Gisler’s residence almost every weekend. The boy indicated that Gisler brought up talk about sexual matters “because I didn’t have a father figure.”
The teenager said he started living with his grandparents right after his 15th birthday. Evidence shows that he has also lived in a home for boys.
The teenager testified that Gisler, who lived alone, paid him to masturbate by putting $1 to $10 in a jar for each act of masturbation. He said this occurred “well over 50 times,” and he indicated that it started before he reached puberty.
A defense attorney noted that police reported that the boy previously said Gisler paid him $2 to $5 per act.
The boy testified that he and Gisler watched pornography together and engaged in oral and anal sex.
The preliminary hearing, which is being handled by Tulsa County Special Judge Allen Klein, is expected to conclude Thursday.
A police affidavit states that in June, the boy disclosed to a therapist, and subsequently to police, that he had been sexually abused by Gisler.
When cross-examined Wednesday, the boy denied that he made the disclosure in an effort to get out of a home for boys.
The teenager’s grandmother indicated that when he was visiting Gisler, nothing happened to cause her to think anything inappropriate was occurring.
Earlier this month, Gisler, 41, was fired from his teaching job at Whitney Middle School. He had been a science teacher there since 2005.
A spokesman for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma said in July that Gisler was no longer part of that program.
Gisler was charged in July with lewd molestation, forcible sodomy and second-degree rape.
Prosecutors recently amended those charges to three counts of child sexual abuse, alleging that Gisler abused the youth at the defendant’s home over a period of more than 3½ years.
He also faces a count alleging that he possessed child pornography on a computer that police recovered from his home in the 300 block of South 44th West Avenue.
Defense attorney Brian Martin has filed a motion to suppress all evidence gained from a search of that computer, based on a contention that a search warrant was “faulty” and that a police search was invalid.
Gisler remains in the Tulsa Jail.
