A former Owasso High School teacher was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday for a sex crime against a student.

Doug Woolery, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge of sexual battery involving an Owasso High School student who was age 17 at the time of the January 2008 offense.

In accordance with a plea agreement, Tulsa County Associate District Judge Dana Kuehn sentenced Woolery to a five-year prison term. Woolery, who had been free on bond, was jailed Tuesday.

At a preliminary hearing in March, the student said he and Woolery stayed in the same room at the downtown Crowne Plaza Hotel during a music convention in Tulsa.

The defendant got on top of him in bed, removed the student’s pants and underwear and fondled the student’s genitals, according to the teenager’s testimony.

The teenager said at that hearing that he did not want this to happen and that he did not “initiate anything,” but he indicated that he did not say “no” and did not tell Woolery to get off him.

A police affidavit, filed when Woolery was charged Feb. 24, states that the victim reported that Woolery’s actions “were unwanted and unsolicited and he was in shock and did not know what to do since the defendant was one of his instructors.”

In March, the Owasso school board accepted Woolery’s resignation. He taught vocal music and stagecraft and managed the school’s Performing Arts Center, and he had been suspended in February after the allegations surfaced.

Woolery has unresolved charges of forcible sodomy and sexual battery in Oklahoma County involving accusations by the same student.

According to police, the teenager reported that while at a music convention in Oklahoma City in January 2008, he and Woolery shared a hotel room where those offenses are alleged to have occurred.
