U.S. Sens. Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn on Saturday endorsed Republican Dewey Bartlett Jr. to be Tulsa's next mayor.

The senators, both Republicans, in prepared statements said that Bartlett, a former city councilor and the president of Keener Oil & Gas, will lead Tulsa based on conservative principles.

"Dewey has the private sector perspective outside of politics that makes him the best choice for mayor," Coburn said. "He has provided leadership in his industry, he has executive experience and he offers the best choice for Tulsa's future."

Bartlett's "dedication to and love for Tulsa can be seen in his years of volunteerism and civic involvement," Coburn said.

Inhofe, who is a former Tulsa mayor, said Bartlett is the conservative choice for the job.

"Dewey is the candidate who can lead the city in terms of creating an environment for citizens to pursue opportunities for growth and prosperity," Inhofe said.

The senators agreed the next mayor should work to make Tulsa safer, make the city more efficient and accountable by being a good steward of taxpayer dollars and make it a better place to do business by reducing local government regulation and involvement in the private sector.

Bartlett will be on the Nov. 10 general election ballot with Democrat Tom Adelson and independents Mark Perkins and Lawrence Kirkpatrick.
