Two men died in separate automobile crashes on Oklahoma highways Saturday.

Brian Dean Beam, 48, of Gracemont, died Saturday just after noon after the vehicle he was driving was hit while heading westbound on U.S. 281 near Binger in Caddo County, according to a report from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Earl Bennet Little, 44, of Binger, was heading eastbound on U.S. 281 when he veered left hitting Beam’s vehicle sending it over an embankment where it rolled one and half times ejecting Beam about three feet.

Beam, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene from massive injuries and Little was taken to a hospital, treated and released.

According to the report, Troopers detected the odor of alcohol on Little.

About 10 hours later at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, Pedro E. Fernandez, 59, of Clayton, N.M., died in a one-car crash on U.S. 56 bear Boise City in Cimarron County, according to the OHP.

Fernandez was heading east on U.S. 56 in a 1981 Chevrolet pickup when he left the road, hit the guardrail, then rolled two times ejecting the driver out of the driver’s side window.

The condition of Fernandez at the time of the crash and the cause of the accident are unknown pending an investigation, the report states, but the driver wasn’t wearing a seat belt. The weather was misty and the road was wet at the time of the accident.

Time to make driving while intoxicated a felony for first offenders. The law is obviously far too lax and serves as no deterent whatsoever.

I agree Popeye. But with even that there are some idiots that would just thumb their noses at the law. You just can't legislate stupid.

Most likely Little's blood was taken. It takes a few days for processing. He will probably be arrested and charged. An friend of mine had a single car accident and was taken to the hospital and that procedure was used. He was charged with DUI.

I'm still surprised to see so many driving without seat belts. Rollovers are bad enough but impossible to survive without a seat belt.

I'm not defending DUI's or DWI's but... anyone who knows true alcoholics knows laws will not deter. I would however favor a felony for a first time offender if a accident occurred as a result. If a offender is caught for the first time, with no accident record, I believe they deserve a break if they do rehab. We have a habit of throwing people in prison for anything now-a-days and wonder why the prison system is over loaded...well duuuua. I know what will some say... well what if they kill someone. As with so many things in life, there's probably no easy answer here unless of course you favor just throwing every one in prison and throwing away the key. As Rush Limbaugh used to say ....send'em up the river. But that was until he got caught up in his own little pain killer scandal. Funny how your perspective changes when shoe is on the other foot.
As for me, we have random drug and alcohol testing at work so don't worry 'bout me.
