The Outdoor Channel has eliminated 30 jobs at Tulsa subsidiary Winnercomm Inc., home of the SkyCam.

Tom Hornish, CEO of Outdoor Channel Holdings Inc., said his company made the decision because of slower-than-expected business at Winnercomm.

“We had to make the decision due to the economic environment,” he said. “Business isn’t coming through as we’d like, and we’ve had to make tough decisions.”

The job cuts, which total 25 percent of the 120 employees at Winnercomm, were made mostly across the board, though the SkyCam and CableCam division was not affected, Hornish said.

Representatives of Winnercomm declined to comment and deferred questions to Hornish.

Winnercomm focuses on television and Web production, development and marketing as well as the SkyCam and CableCam mobile camera systems used in televised sports and other live events. The company was purchased by Temecula, Calif.-based Outdoor Channel Holdings in January for an undisclosed sum.

At the time of the acquisition, Winnercomm CEO Jim Wilburn speculated that it could lead to more Tulsa jobs as the company increased its services for The Outdoor Channel.

Winnercomm has provided programming, graphic design, marketing and Web development for 13 other cable stations.

Hornish said he still considers Winnercomm a valuable part of his corporation. “Overall we’re still happy with the acquisition, due to the synergy and the production capabilities the company brings to us,” he said.

At its peak in September 2008, Winnercomm employed 180 people. The company, which creates

more than 1,000 hours of programming a year, has earned 13 Emmy Awards.
