A man was charged Friday with first-degree murder in a shooting death that followed a night of partying with the victim, Tulsa County District Court records show.

Hassan Fareed Smith, 28, was shot to death at the Polo Club Apartments last Sunday after a dispute with Tyrone Michael Fails Jr., Officer Jason Willingham said.

The two had gone to a party the night before and started arguing at Fails’ apartment in the 12700 block of East 40th Street, police said.

Smith reportedly went outside and then started pounding on the door about 5:45 a.m. Police allege that Fails, 23, answered the door and opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol.

Smith died at the scene.

After the shooting, Fails called the police and surrendered when officers arrived, Willingham said. During questioning, he admitted to the shooting, his arrest report indicates.

Fails was convicted three years ago of unlawful possession of a controlled drug, but he spent no time in prison, court records show.

Smith was a convicted felon who had spent time in prison on drug and gun convictions, Oklahoma Department of Corrections records show.
