A morning rush-hour police chase that stretched from Bixby to Tulsa ended when officers fired several shots at a vehicle Tuesday morning.

Damon Caldwell, 35, was arrested about 8:15 a.m. after two Bixby police officers shot the tires on his white Ford pickup, Bixby Police Chief Ike Shirley said.

Taken into custody with Caldwell was a passenger, Tamara Barber, 23. No injuries were reported.

Bixby Police Officer Richard Stewart stopped the pickup at 111th Street and Memorial Drive after noticing that it had an improper tag, Shirley said. As Stewart approached the pickup, it sped off.

The pickup was involved in a small collision near 81st Street and Sheridan Road, but it continued to 71st Street and Sheridan, where it jumped a curb and lost a tire, Tulsa Police Officer Jason Willingham said.

Shirley said Stewart and Bixby Police Capt. James Kite opened fire on the pickup, feeling that the fleeing vehicle posed a continuing threat.

Police said Caldwell drove behind a shopping area at the northeast corner of the intersection and that both of the pickup’s occupants ran away. Tulsa police arrived as the pair were fleeing, and both were taken into custody, Willingham said.

Shirley said Barber cooperated with investigators and had asked Caldwell to stop during the pursuit. There was no evidence that she acted illegally, and she likely won’t face charges, he said.

Caldwell was taken to the Tulsa Jail, where he is being held on complaints that include kidnapping and
eluding police. His bail is set at $62,550, records show.

Shirley said that Caldwell, a felon, indicated that he ran from police because he didn’t want to go back to prison.
